so over the last week or so i have sort of started to use an android emulator, i got that showbox apk for now, havent looked up much yet, i figured a computer/laptop be better use than an android box and while it runs no problems what soever on my intel tower, the laptops i have seem too weak for them.

i replaced an old timer with dell insprion 11.6 with N3050, 2gb ram, emmc drive, i got the dell yesterday and yes its slowish for general, but i was hoping i couldve used it for the emulators as i dont want a desktop for it.. youtube is so so, but after a few trials, that Nox app player emulator seems to be a little better, the videos are not good and overall just slow to do anything, the requirements for android are low, but dont half hog pc resources.

obviously from mentioning it in other topics my intel build has a g3950, 8gb ram dedicated graphics, so its no surprise it runs smoothly, but i want a laptop to use when in bed which made that dell perfect with its size, but what is the minimum spec i would need to have better usage?

little update.

after awhile and im guessing from running the 'clean up' within the application because sound suddenly stopped, video playback after a little self adjustment did become better than it was when i made this topic, however i would still be interested to know minimum performance to run smoothly.

Generally a couple of cores and some spare RAM. Android usually runs pretty smoothly with 2 cores and 3-4GB ram. Ideally CPU should support Vt-x

Ideally need a CPU that supports virtualization, I believe the i5 series is the first to do so. So at least i5 and 8gb of ram, I am out of touch with GPUs. Give bluestacks a go.

thanks for replies.

well the laptop has 2 cores and the VT support(celeron n3050), but it only has 2gb ram which cant be upgraded, ive got a 32gb sd card fitted to the laptop now for storage and updates, but dont think that will help keeping ram usage down.

at the moment ive using the Nox app player than seems to be okay(found it better that bluestacks 4 as it had less usage), but running a video is good then so so, the memory usage can be fairly high, but under 100mb, got rid of couple things and disable some things to free memory, but not enough... the laptop is good enough for general as its intended, but video playback is meh.

okay then i guess i will have to give up on this dell and either buy a better laptop or put my other desktop back to use that im trying to sell, i thought emulators were simple and easy things given a Raspberry Pi can run them....

Memory is the main thing, I'm sure task manager is faulty when it comes to reporting mem usage. Something is faulty in there anyway.

probably lol, but as of last night that laptop become useless, windows update on to sd card, now theres no desktop , so cant even see if i could use it for cache/memory use, guess this is a good time as any to get a better replacement lol, 4gb should do.

Wouldn't Android X86 be better? Or do you *need* Windows too?

well as i said at the start of the thread i was originally looking at android boxes, because my partner had one, but then i installed bluestacks 4 to my intel tower i used and it was good, didnt try much on it, i figured id get a laptop as its pretty much only to use when im in bed or if i go anywhere for a few days, but for general use and not just for emulators, i could probably use my pi or get another pi are try one under that, but i wanted to be able to use windows as and when needed.

i am only trying emulators i see on google search, ive never tried any other sort or to use emulators before, so i dont quite know what im doing lol, but clearly that laptop is not up to par.

*reviving*

Just started using Nox emulator with Nougat upgrade - whats the catch ?

not for plaing games, but just access to a few android apps.
with hardware acceleration, it seems much faster than either bluestacks/Andy or googles android studio.

After it starts, I do block some IP addresses in the hosts file, in windows
per https://www.reddit.com/r/noxappplayer/comments/5nmoyf/stop_nox_from_installing_random_apps/
theoretically to avoids it loading unwanted apps.
[also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyQK2oIJvug]

The above article suggests blocking in both windows, and rooted android, but, I cannot find a free hosts editor for android,
and have not yet researched a better technique.

Anyway has anyone had any problems with it ??
