I use an old AMD586 (i.e. any old second hand kit). Have been using this floppy based router for four years now. Rock solid reliabilty. Only times it is turned off is if I want to tinker with the hardware. Last shutdown manually on 6-6-6 when PSU Fan started to fail. At that stage it had a continuous uptime of around 380days.
Very easy to setup. And once setup, you can ignore it forever. I set this up for my mates four years ago and they know nothing of linux. It just sits in the corner of the room huming away happily.
Got a Belkin F5D7633 here, rock solid ADSL 1+2 Wireless Router cant fault it at all, excellent userfriendly interface, Tweakable via telnet & DMT tool, very good signal range and supports 125Mbps transfer speeds... the list goes on
