Whats the point of having two ethernet connections on my motherboard?

One is usually an Intel that has high compatibility and the other can be a ‘gaming’ NIC E.g. Killer Networks which claims to optimise stuff for ‘gaming’.

And if one breaks, you can always use the other...

In the traditional home user scenario, it’s largely pointless, however as a premium feature to differentiate and cater for a prosumer who may use virtualisation/teaming/LACP and has a managed switch, it’s a cheap bullet point. It’s frustrating having to ‘waste’ a slot on additional ports unless you specifically need something non standard/exotic. Also the low end intel stuff can vary in terms of compatibility/capabilities under certain OS’ and the bigger the number doesn’t always tie in with additional features as you may expect.

There are uses but in a consumer motherboard I suspect it's mostly for marketing purposes, two is better than one. Personally I wish manufacturers would go back to plain green motherboards without all stupid lights/designer heat sinks etc, looks don't matter in a motherboard to most consumers and if it does then let those people dress them up at their own expense.
