Evening all, ive just built my 1st oc system with
Phenom II x4 965
2x2gb mushkin blackline 1600mhz
Ma770t-ud3p with f12 bios installed
Hd6700
Coolermaster 500w
Arctic freezer 13
12cm fan on front of coolermaster elite 330 case
12cm arctic freezer fan on rear

According to amd overdrive at stock speed 3.4 im running 39c @ idle, running prime95 it creeps up to approx 60c where I cancel the test. Ive tried and tried oc in bios just a simple 19x200 @ 1.5v and save but pc wont boot yet if I put the same settings in via overdrive it runs and is stable but just heat increases... Why?! :-S

Ive never oc before but think I got the basics right,??? I would like 3.8-4ghz but heat is holding me back

Ditch AMD Overdrive, it's not the way you want to be overclocking tbh

get into the Bios

Stock voltage if memory serves is around 1.4v
drop that down to around 1.375v
and move the multiplier to 18, this should give 3.8Ghz, run prime, if it crashes, bring the volts upto 1.4V and continue with prime, everytime prime crashes up the voltage by a small margin.

If prime continues to crash at 3.8Ghz with more than 1.45v then you either have a naff motherboard, or your chip is very poor indeed.
Max voltage on that silicon is 1.55v but i wouldn't advise going that high without sufficient high end cooling (IE not your little Freezer 13)
Max temps are 62c, ideally keep them under 55c.

Ok thanks, i only just managed to oc in bios today and get it to boot, but with 13x300 @ 1.5v.

these figures were in custompc mag where they gave step by step instruction on how to oc phenom 965. it booted, then crashed, and its a pain to having to keep clearing cmos to reset it again.

il try what you said. now...

if board is a bit naff (gigabyte) what can you recommend for an honest oc speed. is a 970 chipset like asrock xtreme 3 ok?

any personal recommendations?

I used to use Asus M4A79XTD with my 955BE and the board was fantastic, all the way upto 4.5Ghz.

Overclocking is just a case of trying different things out, use any guide very loosely, because different chips and different boards can offer different results, heck even the same set-up can't always guarantee the same results :)

Right, got it booted with the settings you mentioned, i have cpuz and core temp running for you to look at.

Never OC before but its addictive!!

Why for me to look at?

Prime it!, keep an eye on temps, pretty much everything you need to do is in my first post :)

Oh, change the multiplier upto 19, that should give 3.8Ghz

Dunno why for you to look at, i guess yo were the 1st and only person to reply to me :)

I primed it but had to stop at 60c, i cancelled the test but it kept going though.
now at 3.8ghz

just seems quite a high idle. you think freezer 13 is a small cooler?? i actually laughed when i got it out the box cuz id never seen an aftermarket cooler before and thought it was mega. Any other fair priced fan/coolers you can think of?

The Arctic is a small cooler, Big coolers like a thermalright silver arrow, Phanteks or a Noctua NH-D14 thats where the muscle is lol

that is a pretty warm idle, what case do you have, what is the airflow like?

i have a coolermaster elite 330 with a 12cm fan on front, and a 12cm arctic cooling f12 fan on the rear with space for 2x12cm fans on the side.

ive left it idle now for 15mins and its 36c

im gonna look for these coolers you mentionned, see if they fit am3 sockets... what i want is air draw being horizontal and exhaust out the rear fan, the arctic cooler has vertical layout only so drawing in air from below, just about gpu and up toward case lid.

Lots of smaller coolers that are no where near the top are great coolers:
Zaward Vapor 120 is one of my favorites
Gelid Tranquillo
Alpenföhn Triglav
Cooler Master Hyper 612S
to name only a few

good to know that actually... what are your comparisons to the freezer 13??

just rebooted @ 19.5x200 @ 1.375v... only thing i have loaded is my browser to get here, idle at 33c

Built wife Athlon II x4 620 @ 3.5GHz (95w stock) with Zaward Vapor.
Stock it was 34c fan full speed, 41c PWM
Oced to 3.5GHz it's now 46c PWM

If your temps keep rising for more than a few minutes your case is not moving hot air out. You have no top vent, correct? Might try adding an exhaust fan in 3x 5.25 front bays for now to get heat out.

When you mount Vaper exhaust out back (I would duct it out back vent) with 3x 5.25 bay as intake with other front intake.

ive just been viewing 1080p vids on youtube, looking at all reviews and my cpu is idle at 39c. and seems happy to sit there. correct, no top vent (facing up anyway) but there is an exhaust 12cm fan right near the vrm etc

do you mean install another fan where the 3x5.25" bays are blowing air into the case the same as the fan at the bottom of the case? i would much prefer to vent out the heat from cpu to rear fan if possible? my freezer 13 cant do that . if you do infact mean another fan where the 5.25 bays are, can you show where/how i get a fan to be installed there, and how i would power it up? i think i have a power fan connector just infront of memory bays though..

Edit:

I think i have found what you mean.. is it this... http://alturl.com/iik7o

That's the general idea. Your Elite 330 has 4 5.25 bays with vented front, correct? Just wedge a 120mm fan in with 1 optical drive using foam and plug it in ;)

doesnt it have to be filtered though? sorry for all the noob questions... its all gobbledegook to me :) is it recommended to plug each fan into a board fan connector or all off a molex>fan splitter?
