Whats the process of switching over a CPU?

so im switching my CPU over from a 5820 to a 5930, what exactly do I do?

just remove the cooler, switch cpu and plug and play?

getting different info on the net, like you need to re-install windows and apparently you need to do a bios update which sounds incorrect?

whats the easiest way guys?
 
You may need to do a BIOS update dependant on your motherboards CPU support. CHeck on their support site.

Aside from that :

Remove cooler
Switch CPU
Replace cooler
Boot up
Allow Windows to detect the new CPU.
Restart.

Update your BIOS before you do the switch, just check there's no issues with the latest BIOS if you aren't on them already.

I doubt a 5820k to 5930k will require an OS reinstall.
 
If you rock windows 10 you don't have to reinstall windows even if you go from AMD to Intel. You just need to reactivate windows (which worked for me using the windows 7 key I upgraded from).
 
If you want 16x/16x SLI/Crossfire, then you need a 40-lane CPU. The 5820K only has 28 PCI-E lanes, so it can't do it.

You should just be able to swap the CPU over.
 
I would reset the BIOS to Default settings as they have different Lanes and cache, should not need to update the BIOS as they were released at the same time.
 
5820 to 5930 wont require a bios update. Just load defaults, remove cooler and cpu then install the new chip

if you only plan on running 2 gpu's 16x 8x will show no difference over 16x 16x in even in bench tests.

I didn't want to update the bios incase I block the mobo or ruin something, I'm better on hardware changes than software, I've got the asus rampage v so I'm thinking the existing bios will suffice as that mobo supports 5820 5930 and 5960
 
any reason for going for the swap curious ? oc the cpu you have will give similar performance for free.

Basically I got my hands on 4 980ti,s so currently I'm using two, see the crappy thing is even though the 5820 is a lovely chip, not all of my pcie slots work, even a sound card or wifi card ect does not work on the last pcie slot, it doesn't recognise anything because the 5820 is limited to a certain amount of lanes


Also I want to install a pcie SSD or a m.2 SSD but doing so will deactivate my current ssd's and hdd's, I have 8 altogether you see, so I'm very limited with the 5820.
 
It's not like the old days when swapping a CPU would cause windows 98 to blue screen on boot :P

Even on 7 I swapped motherboards and never had an issue.
 
guys ive just installed the new cpu, basically booted up and pc stated new cpu detected, so I went into bios and had a quick peek, 5930k is listed.

I then enable XMP

So then boot into windows and windows 10 is already activated, I go into bios again thinking to OC the cpu, but im hit with so many settings I just jump out, rampage v has way too much OC settings...

But I thought enabling XMP OC's the ram and CPU, isnt there a more easy and simple way around it?
 
oh guys also looking at the "Ask 8 Pack Thread"

I see a lot of people mention stuff about " oh I have a J Batch" Ignoring this I realise that after comparing the 5820k and the 5930k they are identical apart from the numbers, the 5820k is serialised as L523C294 and the 5930K as J545B145

does that mean I have a J Batch CPU,? what ever that means???
 
Yes but not all J batches are fantastic clockers, it can depend on the numbers afterwards too, even if they've got the exact same batch number there can be a difference.
 
I'm hoping the reason it hasn't been mentioned is because its obvious, but just in case - remember to clean the CPU cooler with rubbing alcohol to get rid of the old thermal paste and apply new thermal paste to the CPU before reseating it.

XMP with that setup isn't always the best idea, especially with m.2 drives. Why not OC manually?

When did that ever happen? Went from pentiums to K6s etc.. on the same board and win 98 installation all the time with no issues.. only cpu thing i can think of is the Win95 speed bug above 350mhz which was patched eventually.
