i have a set of GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra. when i overclock it to 900mhz i have to increase the latency to 5-5-5-18 otherwise very unstable at 4-4-4-12, am i doing something wrong?

the other problem is that when overclocked, temps go upto 50 to 55 degrees, is this safe? should i get more cooling for the ram e.g. a fan on top of the rams to cool it down? BTW i use a temp sensor taped to the heatsink of the ram to read the temps.

my system:
E6300 @ 2.8 (400x7)
gigabyte DS4
Geil 2GB (memory multiplier at 2)

thanks

You manage to read the ram chip temp? I assume with a infrared thermometer?

Geil 6400 is a good clocker, and normally you wouldn't have Micro D9 problem with a DS4 board (even my old DS3 was happy with D9 running 500Mhz)

So try to relax subtimings a bit, especially TRFC, that's in BIOS, you can further adjust these with Memset in Windows.

But the key here is voltage, IIRC Bios lets you run +0.7 vdimm (= 2.5v), so active cooling is highly recommended once you past manufacturer's specified voltage (2.2v max).

For 1000Mhz 4-4-4, look at 2.3v vdimm.
