Recently there's been a bit of discussion regarding breaking the rules, by talking about illegal activities on here. In particular any threads talking about running osx on non-mac hardware have been locked. This brings me to my question, what's the score about discussing console mods? Is it actually illegal to mod your own console, to run other software. I wrote a post about running homebrew software on a DS. There are some solutions available which do not involve any soldering etc hardware modification and merely rely on plugging in third party hardware into the DS. There is also a load of homebrew applications which have been written for the DS. In what way would running these apps be illegal? I'm entirely confused, as I got my thread locked with the reason simply being "warez". I thought that warez referred to unlicensed/pirated software? Please could somebody shed some light on this for me. I'm not trying to break any rules, all I'm trying to do is use a DS as a nifty pocket PC, and I'm baffled as to why I should have a thread locked for discussing it.

From how I see it:

It's dodgy ground, as allowing one type of legit modding talk would result in lots of other dodgy modding talk. It's a stance that has been taken on these forums for a while.

So basically, avoid modding talk.

Well that's a bit rubbish. However, if it has been so decreed, then I shall abide (grudgingly) to the rules. Even if they are totally lame.

But you're not allowed to tell me where right? Heaven forbid we condone modding on techy forum. Or maybe you are allowed to give me a hint?

No, as I don't know, and even if I did, I wouldn't be allowed to give you a link or hint. Yes it's a tech forum, but when the tech and modding touches legality issues, then it wont be allowed.

Well, thanks for clearing that up. I guess I'll **** off elsewhere then. There's a couple of other places I can think off that might be more receptive to this sort of discussion.

It's a shame you've taken that attitude to this.

This forum doesn't need talk of homebrew software or modification to survive, and given OcUK is a legitimate shop, it can't risk it's forums members giving illegal advice. It's the same with Medical advice.

Still, if that's all you can contribute, you will be better elsewhere.

I dont know if I should stay out of this (I probably should) But isnt homebrew software only against the terms and conditions of the company, I dont think that law is involved into the matter is it?

Don't get me wrong. I understand the situation fine. I just think it's a shame that we have to air on the side of caution. There are some pretty knowledgable folks on this forum, and I would have appreciated their input if it were allowed. I'm not going to stop coming here just because I can't talk about this one particular topic tho. I actually do have more to contribute. If you look at my other posts you will see. Still, thanks for making me feel so welcome .

I wasn't even aware that it was against the terms and conditions of the company. As far as I know, there's nothing dodgy about it at all. But my knowledge on the subject is hardly extensive, hence the asking questions on OC forums.

Nothing wrong with doing what you like to your own consoles, however the owner of this forum is responsible for what gets said here.

If you do not like the rules then do not post quite simple, if it was your forum you would be free to make whatever rules you want. It is not your forum.

The rules are not open to debate at all, homebrew and any form of questionable legality modding will never be allowed on OcUK forums.

Follow the rules, go somewhere else like you say if you do not like the place as nobody is forcing you to post.
