Apple E-mail I received today said:
Dear Tom McLean,

Apple is pleased to announce exciting new enhancements to the MacBook Pro family that affect your recent order.

The new, faster MacBook Pro now features the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors, a Multi-Touch trackpad, more video memory, a larger hard drive, and more.

Accordingly, we are pleased to revise your recent order by substituting the original product you ordered with the new MacBook Pro at no extra cost to you.

Although the Apple Remote no longer comes standard with the MacBook Pro, we are including an Apple Remote with your order at no additional charge.

To avail of this offer please forward your payment at your earliest convenience, if you have not already done so. Once your payment has been processed you will receive an order confirmation email.

In fact, depending on the configuration you ordered, you may be entitled to a partial refund. If you are paying by Credit Card, Debit Card or Leasing, the price will be adjusted automatically. If you are paying by any other method, please call us on 0845 600 1683 to provide the following information.

Now I've had the MBP for 3 weeks so I'm well outside the 14 day return thing. Have Apple just got mixed up here? Is this an e-mail you would get if the product you ordered hadn't be delivered yet?

At this stage in my uni course I don't think I can afford the time to mess about switching computers again but I do have a thing for the latest shiny hardware. :p

Ring Apple. It's the only way.

If it's genuine then count yourself lucky, a replacement MBP at no charge?! :D

I purchased mine recently and this sounds a bit random, and you would be very lucky.

Sadly things which sound too good to be true usually are, so call apple before doing anything else.

Let us know how you get on, oh, and if possible what date did you purchase your Mac?

There will be a few users on here who might be interested in ringing Apple if they feel they qualify..

..at least if they've bought around / later than your purchase-date :)

Right I've just got off the phone with Apple (been very busy since I started this thread).

The nice lady basically said that because the MBP had been shipped they weren't going to replace it with the upgrade but that they were going give me a rebate due to the drop in price of the new models. :)

So I just have to wait for them to calculate the difference and e-mail me with conformation but it looks like I'll be getting some money knocked off what I was originally quoted. As I'm paying through finance it might knock off the damage of a couple of months of interest.

Panzer, if you don't mind me asking, how did you find the finance payment? In terms of how easy it was and so on.

Also, can you get the HE discount and pay with financing?

Yeah I got HE discount with finance. The only down side was that it takes a couple of days to complete the process - getting the forms to sign and sent off. But I guess if you're waiting a couple of weeks for a BTO an extra couple of days won't make much difference.

Apart from that I had no problems.

:)
