What's this French bug please OcUK?

We're in S. France (Tarn-et-Garonne) and these lovely creatures keep crawling up / jumping on us and having a good knaw.

I'm posting because apart from ticks and bed bugs, I've only ever know flying insects to eat / attack me in Europe, whereas these beasts don't seem to fly.

They sort of look like bed bugs, but are too big at roughly 1cm in length.
 
Thanks all. I had no idea these were roaches. From Google it seems that they could be German roaches...which apparently bite very rarely! Nasty little buggers.

Thankfully the horse fly population hasn't made itself known in any great numbers. It's all about the guepes this year.
