What's up with BFG?

In early December 2008 I had a BFG 8800GT go bad on me. It would crash when trying to load games or not even boot up at all. I contacted BFG support and had an RMA setup. A week or so later I received a 9600GT. Confused I called the BFG support number and was told that "In fact that was an upgrade". After I talked to someone else they told me they had no idea why I was sent out that card and I would be sent out a 8800GT because they had those in stock. So anyway to make a very long story short I ended up receiving another 9600gt after I complained about the first 9600gt that was sent out. After calling for a week or so, being told this and that by which ever manager they decided to put me through to, I was ****ed. I had been lied to and I had wasted more time than I deemed necessary so I sent out a mass email to every address within the company I could find or create. I received a phone call from Mr. Kozlowski (aka "The Dude") four minutes after I sent the email. He was able to do in five minutes what the rest of the company had failed to do for a month. What I'm saying here is um, Mr. The Dude, you are my hero.

Now for the sad part. The card that "The Dude" had sent out to me died last week. Yes, yes, imagine my frustration. I recently sent an email to BFG, with no response and just sent another one minutes ago. My thing is, I've now had 3 BFG cards fail on me in less than a year and a half. One was new out of the box and the other two have died while playing L4D, not a very taxing game. How could that be? I've seen a steak in a room full of bums last longer than these cards

My ATI 9500pro's fan stopped working years ago and its still running to this day. My gigabyte 6600gt, still running and my faithful and always loving, EVGA 7900GS KO is in my machine right now. All of those cards have been used and abused. I don't overclock. I keep my case clean, cool, and as dust free as possible. Is it crappy manufacturing? Does anyone else hold BFG in such a high regard, just like I do <insert sarcastic smiley here>? Has anyone had similar problems with their BFG cards or BFG RMA's? Let me know, I'VE LOST MY FRAKING TAIL!

Sorry to hear about the bad luck dude

If I had 3 cards die in the same system ..... I might be thinking the system is killing them ?

Have you tried any other cards in that system apart from the goners ?

Definitely sounds like your system is killing them tbh mate - considering 95% of GPUs are manufactured in the same factory to the same standards. What's your PSU?

I had a 6600GT from my old system when I built this one. Then the 7900GS KO was was in the system for a year is still doing fine and now back in the system. The 7900GS was also on loan to a friend from when I bought the 8800GT. Also to clear it up, the first out of box card didnt even work. It would just spin up to 100% and beep at me. I've ran an 8600GT in the system that I bought NIB from a friend that worked for a month or so before I got the replacement card. Considering I've had 5 GPU's in this machine, with the same specs (added some RAM) tells me that there is nothing wrong with the system.

Hmmmm, all I can say is don't bother with BFG in the future then tbh. Everyone seems to hold them in such high regard, but it's a shame you've had such a bad experience with them. It's all very strange.

See that's what I'm trying to figure out. Am I just getting hosed here or what? They're customer service team alone is enough reason not to buy from them anymore.

Have you had that PSU for a while? You do realise that power output decreases over time for every PSU, so if you've had it a while, it wont be producing anywhere near what it did when it was new.

I've had a problem trying to find specs for your PSU, but if it's also known as the X-Connect (XVS) 700w ULT33183, then it only produced 40a@12v, which isn't a lot really for a 700w PSU, which leads me to believe it's not a quality brand.

As said practicarly all cards are made by the same manufacturer. It's only warranties which vary and BFG are normally very good on that score.

Either you are very unlucky or as said something is killing the cards in your system.

The 9600GT is an upgrade so what was your problem? Bet it was brand new aswell

I personnally hold BFG in such very high regards as they have never failed me with customer service, and quality products

I have 4 bfg cards and a bfg motherboard thats how much i rate BFG

My cards are ok. **Touches wood on desk** I've got 2 9800GTX+ OC's and even though the heatsink on one has been designed by a child, they are both running fine.

You sure? I thought it had less processors than the 8800gt?

EDIT: it does 112 vs 96 so the 8800gt is the better card. They should have sent him a 9800GT which is just a rebadged 8800gt as a replacement

8800GT to a 9600GT is an upgrade? Could you find me a benchmark for that or have you ever looked at the specs for those. As for brand new RMA replacements do not come in box, they come in a bag.

The Ultra PSU you found was the correct one, ULT33183.

Sorry, three more posts since I hit reply.

Ultras are not great PSUs mate. I know you're sure it's not your PSU and there's nothing I can say that proves it is, but I wouldn't trust my system with one.

Think the whole 9 series has compared to the 8 but they still manage to beat the 8 series.

Wrong, the 9600GT is a cut down 8800GT and is in fact noticeably slower :)

i wouldnt say a 9600 is an upgrade! probably has the same sort of performance or slightly less than the 8800

So in laymen terms it would be considered a what? Downgrade maybe? Which was my complaint there.

Reflux, I agree, its about the only thing that I am unsure of, yet I've had no other problems that would indicate PSU, the other 3 cards have performed flawlessly. I do have a Ultra X3 Series 600wat PSU sitting here NIB, i could try it but its similar specs, 12V 36A, so I'm not sure that would do me any good.

Sounds like they are going thru a turbulent patch due to all the returns ive heard theyve been getting, guess it sucks to be nvidia right now.

ive been ok with bfg, granted my 9800gtx was artifacting a week after i had it but its a widespread 9800 problem apparantly, not just bfg cards experiencing it.

EDIT

Also why are all the bfg cards on OCuk out of stock?
