whats up with ram prices

RAM prices are a bit temperamental right now, with DDR2 being phased out and DDR3 becoming the norm, prices change a lot, keep checking back and the price will drop I assure you.

exactly, i recently paid 6 pence for 2x256mb ddr2. for my older workshop pc. nobody wants it. just a shame i havnt got 10 memory slots for it.:D

That's the main reason nobody wants small RAM sticks, most Mobos only have 4 slots, but still a good option if you have spare slots to fill on an old PC

I bought some DDR2 ram for 30 pounds 5 months ago and it is 60 pounds now! It's incredible.

Just keep your eye on the prices. They are up a down more than a certain footballers ar$e

2nd-hand prices are screwey too.

Last month, for instance, I bought 4gb Geil 2133mhz DDR3 for £38.

This month I'm looking for another 4gb. No auctions are ending < £60. One auction ended at £50 for 2gb working + 2gb faulty!

I'm watching every day, but this month is crazy month, obviously.

If you ask me there's very little demand for ddr3 and much more demand for ddr2 thus the double price second hand value for ddr2.

Wasn't too long ago 2x1gb ddr2 would cost you £15-£20 and 2x2gb £30-£35.

I'm wondering what I'll get for for 4 x 4GB sticks of DDR2 when the price of DDR3 is low enough for me to upgrade to i7 and not drop anything in ram capacity.

Inflation. If you look at your weekly shop for example most prices on there have risen in line with the rise in petrol. I would expect the Budget at the end of the month to push things up a little higher.

cheers

Surprised me too.
I ordered 'Patrtiot G Series Sector 5 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel (PGV34G1333ELK)' on Thursday (which I'm still waiting for - grr, so much about £10+ being in stock) for £79.99 but it's now £88.99. The 'Patriot G Series 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel (PGS34G1333ELK) ' was also £79.99 at the time, and has remained at that price.
Very confusing, never realized prices would change like this.

who's forecasting when it's gonna drop again?

I don't mind waiting 6 weeks or so... I've bought a motherboard but nothing else yet for an i5 750 new build.

I've been watching 2nd hand ddr3 prices on the bay for a couple months now.

About 2 months ago, I got 4gig ddr3 for < £40.

The month after, nothing went for less than £65.

This month, I've just seen 4gig (and same spec as mine) go for £100. 2nd hand.

To say the market is in a state of flux would be an understatement :p

I believe there were some forecasts a while ago that Windows 7, and the reduced manufacture during the "global economic crisis" was going to drive memory prices up for at least a year :(

Ho ho ho. Another 4gig set bid up to £100 and there's still 2 hours left to run...

This isn't even the extreme performance stuff, just normal 1333 or 1600 DDR3. Craaaaazy.
