What's with all the black and red?

Just wondered what everyone's thoights are on all the black and red that's been popping up in recent times?

I remember when MSI released their Z77 MPOWER, and had all the matching Lightning cards and the memory too, which was quite different from what I'd seen, but that now seems to be fading out in terms of the matching hardware, in favour of the black board with red accents, which has been done so many times for years now.

I've just got the white Sabertooth board, because for a while now it seems like the only board that's actually stood out. At least to me, anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I like black and red, but it just feels done to death. I get that it's a popular combo, so it makes sense for manufactures to produce it, but I don't know... I just think we need something a little different. Particularly it a black and red themed build isn't your thing.

What do you guys think?

Totally agree. Looks nice, but it's really been rinsed out.

Saying that, I do have a black and red mobo :o :D
I've found that you can hide it well enough if you fill all the slots ;)

Its a combo I have myself and I admit I'm a big fan of red/black. But like mentioned above, fill all the slots and stick on a big cooler and its hard to tell what my board looks like.

If not black and red, what other colours would be good, personally I would mind seeing orange and black for no other reason then I like the colour orange.

Black and red is fine, the point is it seems that a lot of manufacturers are opting for it, rather than other colours.

I'd love to see more purple to be honest, purely because it's my favourite colour. I guess it comes down to what's popular amongst consumers, and it seems as though a lot of people want a black and red system. Which looks cool, and there are lots of matching pieces to make a fully themed system.

It's just everywhere, is all.

The Asus TUF stuff would have been great if they'd released camo patterned cards. Not that I'd have bought it anyway, since the RAID controller, wireless card, sound card and all don't match and end up ruining the aesthetic of any matching hardware you have in a machine anyway.

Great if all you have is a board, ram, card, cooler and some matching fans. Pointless once you start filling it with other stuff.

I'll admit I'm guilty of having a red/white/black combo going on. Matching corsair sp/af fans and cables braided in theese colours. My second system is just a mish mash of bits.

Obviously it's all down to personal preference, colours you want/like and what perhaps a little what's available at the time of your build.

I must admit, I've bought the white Sabertooth knowing full well that I'm limiting myself in terms of matching hardware, but I'm waiting on Broadwell and I wanted that specific board for when it's available. There's some white hardware out there, but not a lot.

I guess that's why there's quite a few people modding bits themselves, or at least spray painting any removable bits they can.

I do agree though that Asus really missed a trick by not bringing out camo themed bits. A full military themed build would look great in a Corsair C70, for example. There's clearly a market for it, but obviously not a big enough one for them to warrant producing it. Shame really.

I ordered the MSI Z97 board for my 4790 because it'll match the colour of my MSI 670 (and I needed pci-e lanes for the raid controller).

But that's about as matching as my interior will be. As I said, my raid controller, sound card, wireless card, all green and bare PCBs. My RAM is also the wrong shade of blue. And it's not like I'll see it anyway as there's no window on my case and it's 4 stone or so with all the hard drives in it so I couldn't put it on my desk and remove a panel to look into it even if I wanted to. :o

That's what I'd have done. Asus Tuf, camo card, some noctua fans and filco did a camo pattern mechanical keyboard too. Would have been great for those doing the whole Tuf / military angle.

Exactly, and I reckon it would sell. Not as much as the ROG stuff, but there would be people who'd want it.

I do suppose however, and as you've kind of mentioned, it's all somewhat irrelevant if you're using a case without a window, or it's under the desk. If it doesn't match, and you can't see it, who cares? But there are windowed cases for a reason, and for those who decide to use them, I think there ought to just be a lot more options.

I miss Soltek :(
Used Epox for friends build years ago, could not forget it as it had a green PCB, I see they are still on the go in China >> http://www.supox.cn/

Around 2002 I was contemplating one of the Soyo Dragon motherboards, but opted for the Abit KR7A-RAID.

Never tried a DFI motherboard, another one of the companies I mentioned gone. :(
