Whats with the 1M? Why not name it like the usual M series

Just curious to know the reasoning behind BMW naming the 1 series M, '1M' rather than 'M1'? Do you prefer it the opposite way around or find it completely unnecessary?

Because the M1 already exists in a completely different form.

M1 is beautiful, saw one up close on the BMW factory tour in the the states.

1M not so much

Okay I understand that, but I'm sure there were plenty of M3's before the current m3's and so on. So why did they not get a name change?

Because all the M3s have been M variants of the 3 Series.

The M1 was not an M variant of the 1 series.

surely [something]M is an established naming model after the Z3M, X5M and X6M where putting the M at the front wouldn't work or would sound odd

Pretty sure Mazda hold the rights to the MX# name anyway.
