So i have a new job now, and have a bit of money spare, and i fancy speeding my pc up..

Current spec is:

Some awful, crappy case thats fallen to bits and offers dreadful cooling >_>
E6300 @ 3.2ghz with freezer 7 pro cooling.
8800GTS 512mb @ 770/1950/1050
2gb Crucial Ballistix
250 WD Caviar SE HDD, IDE :(
19" Monitor @ 1280x1024.
gigabyte DS3 965p motherboard.

So, what would you upgrade if you had this spec?

CPU and your graphics card seem fine. If your case is crap then that's got to be something to be looked at :)

I'd suggest also a SATA HDD and a new monitor. The 22" Samsung 226BW is a great price at the moment.

Might want to consider 4GB of RAM if you're running Vista, though it's not really the first thing I'd do.

only obvious choice is case, you could get another 2gig ram as its cheap and if you have a room bigger screen
i'm not realy happy with quality of my 19" but playing @ 1280x1024 means i dont have to upgrade as soon as if i was playing @ higher resolutions :D

i'd save the money for later this year when new intel socket comes out and see if its worth it

What operating system? If it's vista64 then anothe 2gb would be advisable too.

I agree though - treat those quality components with a new case!

I know case would be the best visually, but i want performance over anything tbh, and case wont give me much more of that, as atm my components arent overheating at all.

In that case, memory if you're using a 64bit operating system.

As for a GPU i'd say wait for ATi and NV's new offerings which should arrive fairly soon.

A nice quad could be the ticket but your motherboard might slightly limit your ability to clock very far.

Really? Its done well with clocking my E6300 to 3.22 which its been at now for the best part of a year or something, i forget how long ive had it now. Would it not clock quads as well?

I use Vista32 and XP32, so more memory seems a later option.

Are the next range of GPus actually gunna be worth getting?

Quads are generally more difficult to clock due to the power requirements of the extra cores. Your 965 was a good board so should clock them a bit but you might not get the guaranteed clocks that P35 and X38 users see.

Yes, with 32bit i'd stick with 2gb.

Don't know about the GPU's yet but they're so close there'd be no point not waiting! ;)

i've got tag slower spec and game @ same res with everything on highest without any problems (i dont play crysis :p)
only thing that you'd see performance increase is if you do photo/video encoding than quad would be faster

just my view ;)

Ive decided to buy a new monitor, a 24inch one..

I realise this will lower performance when i want higher, but im just so tempted by one ive found!

I hope my GTS512 can keep up lol

Aye monitor is the best choice, you should get yourself SATA2 hdd also, spinpoint f1 750 or 1tb will be the best choice, and they're cheap as well.
