Was looking round the local dealerships with my brother, as he is due a new company car soon, we visited Vauxhal, Audi, BMW and Renault.

He was looking for either the Insignia SRi [160], Audi A3 2.0tdi, BMW 1.8d sport.

But the problem was, all the dealerships only had basic entry models in, which you cant really compare to the top spec models!

Just thought this was a bit odd, and offputting especially for the insignia which in basic spec is actually very dull and poor, but in SRi spec is very nice.

Recession sucks, I remember going roung with my mam and dad when i was younger and they had all the flash cars inside the showroom and I would sit in the nice cars.

I hate Gordon

I found this when buying my car. I had to hunt around for a dealer with the engine I wanted and even now, my local dealer doesn't have a single one on display nor a GTi.

Could partly be that when they do get the higher end models in, they shift them very quickly.

Spoken like a true Geordie :D!

SRi insignia is near top spec motor, and is completely different to the basic level insignia, in the terms of seats, dash, exterior trim including alloys and fogs.

Granted the bemmer and audi wont change much, but its nice to see them with some decent alloys and nice seat. They are supposed to entice the veiwers into buying the car!!

My local Audi showroom had a fully kitted RS6 parked outside (CC brakes and everything) with an S3, RS4 and R8 inside.
My local VW showroom had a Golf 2.0TDI, Golf GTI and some VW Polo in the showroom, yet had a mint blue R32 parked outside in the rain
My local Honda showroom had a Civic Type-R, a diesel Accord and a 2.2 Diesel Civic inside and a whole array of crap outside :p

Well if that's what he has a genuine interest in then speak to local dealers and see what they can do to arrange a test drive in, beware though once they get a sniff you're a company car man they might turn off completely.

I know that practice stinks but having worked in a showroom I know it's a practice that is widely done sadly.

Your location answers any questions as to why :D

I was out at car showrooms in exeter at the weekend

Audi had loads of A5s, RS4s and RS6s, an RS4 cabrio, R8 inside etc etc
BMW had loads of high spec 5 and 3 series, loads of E92 coupes, Z4s and lots of highish spec 1 series (like 120ds). Didnt see what they had inside, but there was at least one 7 and a 5GT.

What you mean is they didnt have any high specced models of low end cars - unsurprising really because people who buy low end cars dont tend to want a high equipment level and the dealers have to get cars in that they can shift easily

Sounds like yet another of these who thinks he's getting a top spec Audi because it says 'S Line on it.

Hint: Its still bottom of the engine range.

And the cheapest model available, until the A1 appears

There are 4 Audi dealers up here and 4-5 bmw dealers. You only tried the Silverlink,

Try others also!

I think it might just depend on the area, weird as it is, the BMW dealer has low engine models but specced out (M Sport with all trimmings), Audi dealer is the same, however VW just seem to put their cheap and nasty stuff out!

There you go, Essex, doesnt matter about performance, gotsta have that M Sport or S-Line INNIT!

He wasn't looking for a big engine just a decent trim level.
You'd have to be a moron to buy a 118d M Sport based on the test drive of a 118d ES, for instance, so what's your point?
