Hi guys i need to have a pick at your brains. My friend brought her pc over so i could set up outlook up with tiscali, whilst going through setting it up it suddenly turned off. Would not boot up no fans spinning no nothing.

My 1st thought is psu had died as same thing happened to mine a few weeks back but if u have it connected to the mains and plug in the keyboard the numlock flashs also if u plug in the lan cable the lights light up next to its socket.

Im guessing they wouldn't light up if psu is dead?

pc spec is:

300w psu
7VT600-RZ GIGA-BYTE motherboard
3db MX 420
maxtor hdd
512mb ram

Not sure what speed the cpu is

What can i try to find out what the problem is or does it sound like the psu has blown?

No ive not got a spare 1, if not psu what could have blown to stop the pc boot up? im guessing mobo or psu thats dead?

If the network light comes on, it isn't the psu or the mobo, possibly the graphics card has played it's last. Failing that ram or cpu.

that sounds like your psu as gone and also looks like the mother baord to ive fixed laods of dead pcs over the years from ding psu's

the only way to test it is get your self another psu and try it out, if it still dont post then its the board as well.

mem and cpu should be ok . some times they do go but rarely

and yes most of the time there is still power going through some of the system
like leds liten up fans still spinning odd things like. even leds on the keyboard light up, that a comman 1 for me. meaning the mother boards gone.

i just fixed another last week that took out the psu mother board and keyboard.
just replaced the hardware that was died and it was all up and runing in no time

good luck

post back what had gone please or if you need more help let us know.

You say it sounds like the psu has gone. if so i wouldn't of thought the keyboard would light up when u plug it in nor the lan cable.

If i was to unplug everything from it so i just have a case, psu, mobo and cpu. no ram no gfx card etc would a pc boot but fail to post?

u need to have gfx card in and ram in for it to post, yea it shound power up.
if the psu is ok

ive had many psus go on pcs ive fixed. with the keyboard num lock on, weird i know but for some reason it happens

ok cheers mate, i'll get a psu of a mate later and try it, will get back to u lot with what happens

Problem solved, it was the psu so im guessing maybe the 12v rail had blown leaving the 5v rail giving enough power to make the numlock and lan light flash.

Thankyou guys for your help

Boo

nice one, not bad there then lucky it was only a psu replacment

its mainly cheap psu's you will find that take out pc hardware. oh yes and get your self a surge protector. they dont cost much and save your pc time and time again from bad power cuts
