Whatsapp - Connection Issue

Did a quick search but couldn't find any threads with a title that would help.

Have a strange issue with my Galaxy S6 where sometimes my internet just stops being connected, opening the lock screen shows the WiFi is still connected and I'm literally less than 4 meters away without anything solid blocking the way. I'm assuming its either internet or whatsapp but I don't have anything else I can test for a constant connection.

For example, someone will send me a message but I often don't get it unless I physically open Whatsapp which is when it seems to re-establish connection.

I've checked the settings but I have a feeling I've missed something. The WiFi is set to stay on and even if it is turning off and reverts to mobile internet it should surely still stay connected/get messages through.

Additionally it makes it quite a pain in the ass with Whatsapp web where it constantly loses connection until I open the app and its less than ideal to turn the auto lock screen function off and leave the app/screen open/on.

Any suggestions? I've just set my phone to a static IP on my router but while I wait to see if that fixes the issue I thought I'd post this.

Does this only happen when on wifi?

Go into the wifi settings, press the menu button, select advance wifi settings, and set wifi to never sleep. See if that helps.

Are you on Lollipop? That suffers from the "Mobile Radio Active" bug which causes it to use mobile data, even when you're using WiFi.

Yeah I've done that Orcvader which is why its annoying.

I lost connection on Whatsapp web, unlocked my phone and it regained connection.

I think I'm on Lollipop? Android 5.1.1?

I've had issues with whatsapp since moving to my S6 too. Absolutely everything I've found online hasn't fixed it. I've learned to live with it now.

I think it may be related to the phone locking. Doesn't seem to be any options related to keeping an internet connection while its locked in regards to specific apps but more so it must be preventing Whatsapp from functioning while locked outside of its own random checks which I think must stop working also as its supposed to check every 5 mins from the googling I did. Whether this is based on a specific lock type also I'm unsure.

I've taken off the thumbprint lock and switched it to a pin lock, set it to stay unlocked at my home location (not ideal really, better would be unlocked while connected to my wifi but that isnt an option). However it still locks when pressing the power button as thats how I have it set.. but I found if its not locked while in my pocket it tends to dial people. Its not so bad when its on my desk so I can let the screen auto turn off and just keep turning it on and off with the menu button but I'm so used to pressing the power button I keep doing it.

Havent seen an issue with it like this at the moment.
