Hi guys,

my wheels need replacing. the groove on my rims have started showing sign.

what is the cheapest way to go about replacing my wheels ?

my rear wheel has a flip hop hub, but i only use the freewheel

many thanks for your help

Assuming your bike has been built with the chain line to suit the flip-flop hub, you won't be able to use an old single speed wheel because the chain line is different and the chain will rub. Stick a wheel with a flip-flop hub for less hassle.

Matt Templeton builds good retro-styled wheels. He trades as singlespeedcomponents on eBay.

If you don't mind fixie-style deep rim wheels then NoLogo wheels seem to be outstanding value too.

thanks for the advice guys.

im really looking to go dirt cheap for price

i went on ebay and found brand new rear double walled rim for £24.99. designed for 5, 6, 7 speed freewheel.

im thinking to buy this and stick my 16t freewheel and adjust the spacers/axle for my chainline etc

what are your thoughts. it should be straight forward. I might only need to redish the wheel.

Erm, a 5,6,7 speed freewheel won't have room for spacers like an 8,9,10,11 speed cassette free hub. Also, they are designed for 126mm separated dropouts, not modern 130mm.

im not using a 5,6,7 freewheel cassett. the wheel comes with no freewheel. its brand new rim.
im going to stick a bmx 16t freewheel on it. and buy some 3-5mm spacers and adjust it accordingly to have straight chainline.

the info i have on them

Rear Spindle Locknut to Locknut Length: 135mm
Rear Spindle Full length: 175mm Approx

my frame has a 110mm horizontal drop out space.

You got a link?

If I understand correctly, Asprilla's point is that you can't use spacers on a freewheel hub, because the freewheel screws onto the hub itself, rather than just sliding onto it and then being locked on with the locknut.

am i allowed to post links?

i am referring to axle spacers. not spacers which go on freewheel because obviously how is the 16t freewheel i install going on the threads.

You can post a link to ebay, yeah.

So you mean use the spacers to set the wheel off centre in the dropouts? What sort of brakes have you got? Surely that isn't going to work well.

indeed. now you understand what am I am planning to do. The only thing I think I might have to do is use a spoke wrench to redish the wheel .

I use shimano 105 brakes.

In my head I can picture doing it and impressed with myself hehe. but I wanted to know if there are any other cheap skates DIY people like me who have done it before lol :D.

I just cant justify buying a wheelset for £70-90, when i don't need know stupid flip flop hipster hub. riding fixed gear in London for commuting is a deathwish

here is the link for the wheelset i'm looking at buying http://ebay.eu/1Per1X7

You can't just re-dish a wheel; you'd need different spoke lengths. Even if you could adjust the spokes to the right length then the tensions will be all over the shop.

what on earth you on about. different spoke lengths ?

have you ever trued a wheel or redished a wheel lool, i have and i have never needed different spoke lengths :s

you tighten the wheel to non drive side or drive side depending on where it sits on the axis.

please don't post silly comments.

never mind guys i just got the answer i needed from another forum.

my theory was right. couple of axle spacers and slight redish if needed to align the wheel straight

I build my own wheels.

You can dish a wheel but from what I understand you are talking about is shifting the rim left or right to re-centre it within the drop-outs to take into account a reasonable change in spacing on the axel. When I build a wheel I choose spokes that will allow for about 2-3mm of vertical adjustment before they are through the nipple.

Surely for the level of lateral adjustment you'll need to achieve you'll need more movement than that?

Edit: I see you say apparently you can do it. Every day is a school day. I'd be interested to see how much adjustment is required.
