When AMD release something to rival C2d...

Well theres 4x4, which is pretty much a bodge job (although numa could be usefull)

then theres K8L, which should be pretty decent

This 4x4 malarky strikes me as a total knee jerk reaction to get quad core on the market fast for AMD. I can't see it lasting long, its just not viable for most people, having to buy 2 CPUs, 2 Coolers etc. They shouldn't have bothered developing it and just made a push for K8L as fast as possible.

Yeah 4x4 looks really bad, you need to shell out for 2 CPUs, uses loads of power, only one (expensive) motherboard works with it, heat issues, noise etc. And it is still slower than the Core 2 Q.

yeah K8L might rival C2D sure... but by then intel will have (and already are) shifting the goal posts... the K8L doesn't just have to rival the C2D... its got to beat the C2D, C2Q and whatever intel releases after that (Nehalem roadmap, etc.) resoundingly to make its mark... hence why I said previously K8L is most likely to be nothing but an embarassment for AMD...

4 X 4 is a terrible idea. AMD need to refresh there technology like Intel have done. Start a completly new range of CPU in my opinion. If Intel can pull it off and destroy AMD in nearly every CPU market there is surly AMD along with ATI should be able to pull something amazing off.

This 'Fusion' idea looks pretty good. It just depends if it all goes to plan, and Nvidia and Intel dont do something sill like merge, or Nvidia do something like putting a Phyics CPU onto the PCB of the graphics card. Or if Intel decides to roll off thier 8 cored CPUs since 4 cores have come really fast.

We don't need 8 core cpus for gaming... 2 cores are ok, 4 cores would be more than enough... I dislike merging the GPU and CPU... its just gonna becoming limiting and expensive... no more staggered, cost effective upgrades...

I do however like the idea of having a unified PPU on the GPU... but it needs to be done properly... if ATI implement one model and nVidia another, etc. then it just makes things a nightmare for everyone... not to mention throwing ageia in the equation... we need a common physics gateway/API even if the hardware and drivers are different.

I think its more of Will AMD release soemthing to rival c2d, rather than when.

with respect, why wouldn't they, its not like conroe is 'untouchable' or anything, its hardly unattainable to AMD to beat it within the coming year, i remember so many times people have said it was impossible to do something, breaking the sound barrier, going to the moon, wolves beating manchester united, theres no way its gonna start happening now, so im thinking K8L beating conroe nicely, intels refresh beating K8L, and so on, the second AMD die theres no point in buying PCs cause intel in all there tyranical nature will just charge extortionate prices for the processors, and whats worse some idiotic people will buy them :p

as well don't bother commenting on K8L being an embarrasement for AMD, if you feel upto saying that, design your own processor to do the job, until then stop killing something before it ever gets produced  (not addressed to anyone barring conroe fanboys) :D

hmm re-read the earlier posts and apply a little mental processing to the content and stop spouting idiotic drivel...

sure the K8L is likely to come out in the coming year... sure it might even manage to give the conroe a good run for its money... however not only is it going to cost a lot more than a conroe now... its gonna cost a LOT more than a conroe then, and no one will care because for the same price you can buy a much faster intel cpu, either quad core or its replacement... unless AMD go completely back to the start with the design process then the K8L is going to be the words "too little, too late" incarnate.

I'm not an AMD hater, I love to see some healthy competition in any market as it tends to drive inovation and in theory keep prices down, tho of late in the GPU market its been bucking that trend so I'm not suprised to hear about possible price fixing...

I have to say I'm suprised at intel tho - the 6300 is a stonking CPU and its still available for £~100...

i seem to remember this when intel would never better the k8. also the k8l is a new design amd apparently didnt want it to be called k9 or addopt a cute doggy mascot. either way as long as preformance keeps going up while prices stay down im happy :)

the whole onboard gpu thing would not suprise me at all, ati already seem to be losing there identify fast imo (amd.ati.com anyone), not that the theory of a onboard gpu is a bad one, its just when ati were a singular they had to be innovative to keep up with nvidia, i think we will see some of that disapearing to be honest as they spend more time resting on there laurels, which can only be a bad thing for consumers imo.

So what's AMDs new architecture going to be, and whens the estimated time it might come out.

Will Core2Duo be the one to beat for some time yet?

K8L might be a disappointment or it might whoop the C2Q, no one knows yet.

Yeah being a gamer i have used AMD CPU's for years and I never thought intel would release such an awesome product... good value, fast, cool, and highly overclockable.

So on that basis I think AMD will be able to regain their 'performance' crown, just not yet, will take at least a year, I am guessing 2 :) .

as I keep saying... K8L doesn't just have to beat that conroe - that would be too short sighted a goal, the conroe has been out months and is currently at the peak of its time, in 6 months or so its gonna be an entry level processor... its got to beat the C2Q and decisively, not just by 10-15%, to stand a chance...

I don't see AMD out for the count, but I think its gonna be atleast a year, possibly as much as 2 before they hit back at the performance desktop market... in the meantime the company is focusing on exploiting and expanding their server market.

About the 4x4 i think when you buy the cpus they come in a pair so you dont buy seperate. Least what i heard somewhere. Kinda like how you would buy dual channel ram.

i think what a lot of you are forgetting is that you can get the board plus the 2 FX74 CPU`s cheaper than you can buy a single Intel quad core CPU. Also according to reviews at least, it has some tangible benefits over its Intel counterpart and indeed the first run of future AMD quad cores. and lets not forget now that whilst kentsfield is billed as "quad core" it is basically just 2 core 2 duo`s slapped on the same die.

i love it when people who own Intel CPU`s say this... go read about the company practices of that CPU your sporting, you may finally realise that there has been NO competition in the desktop CPU market for a good 16 years at least.
