You may have heard of the horrific case in Belfast of a 2 week old old baby who has been raped and is currently in intensive care. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-45757510
Absolutely horrific beyond words and the individual responsible should rot in jail for a very long time indeed. However as soon as the story broke, social media users started to do their usual snooping and tracked down the identity of the arrested individual.
They are now throwing posts all around facebook and twitter moaning that the papers wont name him and including his facebook profile complete with a picture of him holding a baby, which one would assume is the poor little child involved. So now, not only the alleged attacker, but the victim (a minor) has also been outed publicly.
Why can't these people realise that the media doesn't name the accused for a good reason, it endangers the case against them. Lawyers like nothing better than to get their teeth into a case where the accused has had his picture blasted around the internet complete with comments such as "If I see him, I'll stab him up and cut his **** off" What a great way to get a fairness of trial questioned, a possible case dismissal and police protection.
I know cases like these raise emotions like no other, but people just don't understand the possible consequences of their own actions on social media.
