im considering a cpu/mobo and ram upgrade sometime in the nearish future but obviously i would like to make it as futureproof as possible for upgrades.

i would like a i7 but is the 1366 socket here to stay or will it only be around for short time? otherwise i may sit it out until i actually need to upgrade.

There will be i5 from Intel this or next year, however it will not be compable with i7.If i was you i would wait because your rig is decent.

Intel is not changing soon at all.

Intel i7 for Enthusiasts/Extreme machines with 1336 will be around for some time, however you will find will be for high end CPU's only, with high end price.

Intel i5 for mainstream machines will be 1150 and will also last some time. This is where the mainstream/low end CPU's will sit, however the boards/cpu will not be overclocker/tweaker friendly.

This has been the roadmap for Intel since before the i7 hit the shelves.

AM3 will probably be your best bet for a long term socket if looking for a reasonable price machine that you can tweak/overclock.

i7 1336 will be here for some time, but be prepared to spend money on CPU upgrades.
