Just played a demo of the new one and the engine hasnt aged well, its not ugly but its not as good as it used to be. Even the sauce engine hasnt aged this badly yet.

I agree, i played the original a couple of days ago and already uninstalled it already because TBH it looks terrible !? thats just my opinion though.

It is amazing how what was once a a respected eye candy game becomes rather dull and bland.

Not sure what you mean by the 'sauce' engine...... :D

I thought the same but I think it was more down to bad level design. The environments are so plain and boring, there's no thought in there. They guide players just by putting boxes in corridors so you can't get past and then, phew there's a door in to an office - just as well or i might have been stuck. You get in the office and there's loads of medkits and armour (WHY??!) and then that door goes in to some random strange wiggly corridor which ends up at a large open area. The whole thing looks cobbled together, the first was similar but there was a half a brain cell on the layout.

It gets really boring very quickly and now the wow factor is less as the engine is older, there's nothing in there other than the super natural bits to keep things fresh which isn't enough.

i was more impressed by half life 2, feels a lot smoother
-the eye candy in hl2 is obviously not on par with fear, but it just plays well

To be fair though, this “add-on” has nothing to do with the original company who made FEAR, they are busy making the sequel called Project: Origin. This was made for a quick buck off the back of the originals success, by a published who’s lost a big franchise.

and condemned 2 ;)

I think some gamers have got a bit more snobbish (not necessarily a bad thing...) in relation to graphics of late. Personally I reckon even engines from 2004 (FC/D3/HL2) look great. Over the past month I've been playing through FC again (and also Lost Coast this week), no complaints from me on the graphics front.

Haven't seen this new FEAR demo but I thought the first expansion pack looked OK.

The Source engine continues to amaze me to be honest, it's the best game engine I've seen imo.

It plays as smoothly on my work PC which isn't an amazing spec - Dell P4 3Ghz, Nvidia Geforce FX 5200, 1Ghz RAM - as it does on my home PC. I think it's because the textures & map design have been so well done, they fool the player into thinking the game engine is doing more work than it really is.

If I recall even when FEAR was first released many people said it looked bland and uninspiring all except the actual fight sequences. It has always looked bland and dated from day 1 It may have been ahead of its time interms of some effects and technology but that did not translate into a beautiful looking, jaw dropping game.

I tend to agree with that; it was more about the game play than the graphics. It was one of the most tense and nervy games I ever played. I played Pray at about the same time and although the graphics were absolutely awesome the game play was a big yawn fest

I thought the exact same when I installed it in my new rig a couple of months back and I only did that because Custom PC still use it as a benchmark

Fear never looked that good in the first place, the start cut-scenes however looked well good but I always thought the majority of the game was pretty meh.
