Hi, I'm Sawell and I've been a cyberholic for about 9 years now.

My Dad bought me a 56k modem with Freeserve for my 12th birthday so that I could start playing Legend of Mir, a relatively unknown 2D MMORPG which used to be advertised on the Sky channel Game Network.

I first discovered online communities via AOL chat rooms (bahaha). I moved onto message boards at about 13, pretending to be 16. Most of the forums I started to frequent are now gone. I've created 6-7 online forums myself, helped with 8 of them and only one of them actually made me any kind of money. For the most part I do it for the kicks, to get people's opinions, to share views and to troll noobs (alright not on OcUK, which is one of the reasons I love it).

I'm now 21 and probably haven't really changed much from when I started posting at 13.

You've physically not changed since you began your Cyberholic journey at 13? ;)

I can't remember how old I was when I discovered tinterwebs, although I remember the 56k dial up tone.. people not being able to call the house when you were using it, fighting to use the internet with my sister aswell hah

I too am a cyberholic.. most of my time is spent on my computer in my room, rather than downstairs with the family watching tv.

Had a computer since the age of 6 (27 now), and mainly just gamed and gamed.

1998 saw us get tinternet in SA, and I became embroiled in IRC with the Cape Town clubbing scene.

Moved to the UK in 2001, set up my own website, joined various clubbing forums, and OCUK a few years later.

The rest is history

I think I originally wanted the internet from hearing about friends having it at school, it took ages to convince my mum it was a good idea :D We eventually got AOL and I wasted many hours in the chat rooms, made some good friends in... in.. Lord of the Rings chat :( :D I wasn't even a fan of LOTR but just got to know the regulars there (kind of like how I'm not interested in PCs much any more but still post here lots).

I eventually wanted to build my own PC because one of my friends at high school (probably in year 10?) was building his own, I got interested although I didn't know a thing about them, I started researching it and saved up, I and asked my sister's boyfriend at the time to recommend a site to buy parts from, first one he said was OcUK, I noticed they had a forum, I've been here since :D The friend at school never built his PC so I blame him for the past 6 years of wasting my time on OcUK :p

I'm 22 now, got my first PC at about 16 or 17, went through a few years of addiction around then but that only lasted a year or two

I used BBS on my amiga with a 1200bps (no, i haven't missed a digit) they were text based. The pages used to draw as though somone was typing them quite fast.

The first time I saw the internet was at college 1994/95. The whole college had one "internet PC" which you had to book a 30 minute slot on. I went on it and typed "yahoo.com" as it was the only website I knew.

Amiga A500 in 1993, using a 14.4 K modem to phone Demon in London.

I was so pleased when they started introducing local numbers to call.

Spot on for me as well... Still remember hotmail chat rooms at lunch time :D

"who you talking to?"
"some 18 year old american model who wants to meet me in the park at 9 tonight... mum won't let me go though, she has no idea!"

Got a 28.8kbps modem on Windows 3.1

Moved up to a US Robotics 56k modem on Freeserve (Windows 95), then to Tesco.net (Windows 98), then eventually moved house and got ADSL on BT (Windows XP). Now on ADSL LLU with UKonline (Windows 7).

Majority of my time was spent on MSN during the 56k days (I remember when it launched, trying to explain to friends in school haha).

Nowadays I use the net a lot more, but I'm also a lot more productive too.

i remember my school went through a phase of using weird machines that had an icons labelled internet, essay(basically word) and numbers(a calculator). they only had these machines for about a year in-between win95 and 98

Can't remember how old I was, but I remember the first time I put "sex" into Yahoo when my mum was out. :D Felt really guilty afterwards. :D

Also for months I was terrified that the websites you visit turned up on your phone bill. :D

Lol... and you could tell just by listening to the modem if it was going to connect or not.

Those were the days, dial up, send and receive mail, and download usenet, usually alt.tasteless and d.i.s.a.

When I used to have a big old PowerMac in about '98?
Dad made it out of some parts out of lots of machines that broke ouver the year that he 'borrowed'. Still in the attic :D
We had this little blue thing that used ot beep sometimes and dad would rush to it and mash some code into the computer (a little like lost, without with death and red lights ect)and all of the ligt would go green and then 'the internet is safe again now.'
I mis the dial tone from dialup tbh. <3
Might go and turn it on and see what happens.....

didn't get internet till I was about 16, so 5-6 years ago, but grown up with computers, first being the Amstrad CPC-464 :D I've still got it, and all the games that came on cassettes
