When did retail cpu's drop the heatsink and fan?

I haven't upgraded for over 4 years but decided to last weekend.
I've also been 'out of the loop' with regards to components for the same time but went for a retail version of the i7 6700K because it was in stock and thought I'd buy a decent cooler once I'd got it up an running only to find that it doesn't come with a HSF!
I was planning on going back to air cooling but this threw a spanner in the works. Do I spend £70-80 on a new GPU block or about the same on a cpu heatsink?
As it was I bought a heatsink for around £50 but that's beside the point.
When/why did this happen?

Just now. And because the stock coolers have always pretty much been... now what's that technical word? ... I know... cack.

No coolers with retail X series chips either on socket 2011 which predates skylake.

Seeing as any cooler that will fit 1156 boards (which was released in 2009) will work with your skylake CPU and that barely anyone used the stock HSF with K chips intel decided to cut costs.

It is well documented that it doesn't come with a cooler.

Of course it isn't, they reduce production costs to increase their profit margin, not to save you money lol.

Was stung by this too buying the 5930k. Plan is to water cool but wanted to quickly run it on air to test everything.

Intel did make a stock fan but I had to buy it from the rainforest. Just like the other stock fans but about twice the height to dissipate the extra heat from the extra 2 cores.

Glad I did as the mobo was being funny with ram which ocuk have replaced for me would have been a pain to block everything and fill the system only to take it apart again lol xD

I paid about £5 for a cheapy sink for hardware testing before watercooling... cant be any worse than the stock sinks...
