Hi all,

I was just wanting to know what some of you guys do with all the old parts that you build-up over the years? I have just put together a "NEW but OLD" build from parts I had around the loft and placed them into a cheap zalman Z3 plus case.

Parts: Intel QX6850 @3.0Ghz
EVGA 4800GTX
Asrock G31M-S MB
3gb DDR2 ram
WD 320gb HD
Corsair TX750w
Win XP pro Ser3

As I have just said, I have put this together because I was bored one day and it runs spot-on. Youtube, old games and software etc. It all runs well. Has anyone else done this type of thing? and if so what do you use it for? or should it just be put in the BIN?

I sell my old parts to fund upgrades mostly but at my parents I have one of the Nokia phone PC cases, a huge bag of cables and loads of old keyboards, mice, speakers, PSUs and all sorts of crap that needs binning

Once its obsolete/not worth anything it gets binned. Chucked out an E6600 and not-so-working mobo together with a barely used quality PSU of the same era, works fine but the connectors don't fit anything anymore (no PCI-E, SATA, or 24pin Power etc). Felt like a criminal act but theres no point in hanging onto it any longer.

My old i7 920/7950 is now doing duty as a second PC/mum's PC which I put together over the course of a few days, reused the old case, gave me something to do. :) Putting Windows/software on + grabbing all the Windows Updates took far longer than the amount of time putting the parts together honestly.

If parts are not worth any value selling etc then I usually just keep them as spares - you never know when a spare part might come in handy, unless it's something not really worth keeping then just bin it.

This exact answer. I use them to fund the replacement, or towards it as it would be. But sometimes, things become so old it just isn't worth selling/keeping.

I pretty much use everything till it dies, but for the rare occasion I upgrade before then, the old parts usually aren't worth much so I hang on to them and use them for projects.

I'm using my old Core 2 E8500 based machine in the lounge for some light gaming and Kodi/Plex.

If you really can't think of anything to use it for, the QX6850 at least is probably worth a bit, and the TX750 will still be good for most systems.

As bledd says, a cheapo ssd would make a big difference in usability.

Thnx for the replies there, I think that I will use it for the same type of thing archer dan has said and maybe a lot of youtubing. Good idea about the ssd bledd, I will pick one up today and give it a try.

I keep all my old parts , mostly cos i dont know anyone else offline who builds pcs or plays pc games.....also I dont really like the idea of doing back transfer or paypal

^Yep, and that is what I am going to do today with old psu's and other bits and bobs and a few old but working gpu's like His-x1950 GeF-7800gs agp.

My old rig was put into an old case with a few old hard disks and setup as a media/file server for the house. Now all my tvs consoles and pcs connect to it to stream music, videos and general file storage.

Another old rig is used for Linux experimentation and other small tests in my limited spare time.

Ahh yes old bits, reminds me to go and visit my parents house and clear out the gubbins I left behind...that was 12 years ago so I doubt much is any good now...anyone want/need an original Pentium or DX2-66 CPU?

All my previous parts get sold to go towards the cost of the upgrade. I keep the boxes and accessories for everything so usually get good prices.
