When do you call it quits?

no point in thinking about it then. A new car lease will never in a million years be cheaper than the upkeep of a car like yours.
My point exactly - £200 a month lease (plus whatever the deposit is) is £2,400.
Dunno about the OP, but with the sort of car I'm planning to get, that'd buy me an entire second one for spares and still give me change!

It's all a balance of Want vs Need vs Can Afford.

Catastrophic engine failure or gearbox* (or a crash)

*Gearboxes can often be found second hand for decent prices.

They shouldn't need to be draining the gearbox oil when changing the clutch

They will almost certainly drain the oil from the gearbox, because it's quite unpleasant getting showered in old gearbox oil after the driveshafts are removed and you tilt the gearbox to manoeuvre it out of the engine bay.

I've only had one car before this and I got rid because of

1 - I've had it 5 years. That's enough time in a Yaris.
2 - want something more comfortable
3 - want something faster
4 - want something with more kit
5 - want something quieter in the cabin
6 - it also will fail upcoming MOT with hole in exhaust and needed new tyres

So instead of spending money to fix it I out the fix money towards car fund for the new car.

What did you get? :P

I've had this for 7 years now, similarly I'd like something faster with more features (don't even have USB on the default CD player).

Would a care fail the MOT for Gearbox being rough?

I'll probably run this until the gearbox behaves a bit worse then look at getting a new car either on finance or lease.

Suzuki's are bomb proof in my opinion as they are one of the very few that are still made in Japan. My missus has done 30k in her 2005 suzuki. All it has had is new discs, pads and tyres. Stick some oil in it once a year and doesn't drink a drop. Will be looking to replace when the time comes with another.

Makes me wonder exactly what you have done to your swift for it to be in such poor mechanical condition.

My Swift sport has been the same, mechanically just general ware items. I used to kick its head in regularly also. Great cars mechanically, not so good interior wise :p

I got £2100 in a trade in which I thought was good considering it's worth £2900 private, £2400 dealer. With a hole in the exhaust, 3 minor cracks in the bumper, bottom grill doesn't sit on properly... and needing new tyres, and only 2 months left on the MOT, snapped his hands off at £2100.

I had iPod integration added to mine at Toyota, cost me £300.

It's now on sale for £3400

To be honest, I am surprised the dealer never picked up on it when he drove it when I traded it in. It was quite a boy racer like from the exhaust.

Edit, I replaced it with a Volvo C30 T5.

Lol, I did have a giggle at that.

I did look after it well right up until I hit that deer….then after that I didn't care as much anymore. Just 1 month before that I spent £750 on it too, new callipers, brake discs, pads, MOT and service at Toyota. I took it to them to fix every little thing right up until that point. But when the deer incident occurred I was like….I'll get shot of it before the next MOT, just needed to get through the summer of weddings and travels. I never fixed or replaced the bumper because Toyota wanted £1100 for a £200 part, and that £200 was the quote for their parts department too. I could have taken it to a 3rd party but I thought taking the hit in trade in value with the crack bumper instead of spending money on it and try to get it back through the sale.

Of course the next 9 months the exhaust thing happened which compounded to changing the car even further. Lots of people at the time kept saying, it's only a cheap fix for the exhaust but they didn't know my mind had already moved on from the car and wanting another one for quite a while. They also thought Toyota exhaust for this car was easy to come by. It would cost about £1,500 to £2,000 to fix the bumper, exhaust, add new tyres, service and MOT. Yes, it is better the devil you know but I rather put that £2,000 towards a new car with no cracked bumper and a better car than keep driving the old one.

I know someone will probably say, it won't cost £2,000 to fix that!!! So here is my reasoning.

Quoted £1100 for bumper, let's be optimistic and say half it to £600 for £200 bumper, £400 for paint and labour.
Quoted £600 for mid-section exhaust, £300 for rear section, they need to be imported from Japan. Let's half that to £450 plus £150 labour = £600. A welding job would only be a temporary fix as it was rust everywhere.
Tyres = 17", around £90 per corner. £360
MOT £60
Service £100.

Which car did you get out of interest?

I'd imagine if I part exchanged I wouldn't get much especially if gearbox is needing fixed.

I'll start looking at some 15/16 cars on finance I think, if I get something for this in part exchange deal even better.

A Volvo C30 T5. Seats 4 instead of 5, but overall not that much bigger, boot is about the same size but just a much nicer ride.
