Hi,
Anyone have any experience about the rules/procedures regarding domains that have expired.

I have tried google but some sites say one thing and another will be different.

There is a domain name that expired on 14-01-2011 and was updated on 25-02-2011 and currently says (on hold redemption period).

The domain has not had a website live for a year now as the company that owns it went bankrupt and the site was for a football team they sponsored. We are trying to gain ownership of the domain for the team and have had no response about buying it from them so we are hoping to register once or if it becomes available.

Cheers

The redemption period is a Domain Registry period of up to 30 days that occurs when a domain name is deleted after having expired unrenewed. In addition, after the 30-day redemption period there is a 5-day Pending Delete Phase. When a domain is in Pending Delete Phase, no one is allowed to renew the domain and it cannot be yet registered because its still not returned to the public domain pool. After the 5-day Pending Delete Phase the Registry will release the domain name back into the public pool of available domain names enabling fresh registration.

So very soon!

Depending how popular it is, others may be waiting for it to become free... if you Google "domain drop catch" you'll find companies that offer to snatch domains as soon as they become available - for a fee however.

Cheers for the info mate. Hopefully we should be ok as the team is in the very low depths of the Spanish League and with only a few hundred supporters a game hopefully no-one else will go for the site.

Don't count on it. An automated service might register the domain as soon as it drops, just to stuff it full of adverts, purely because it's already been registered and used. If you want it, you should definitely investigate a proper acquisition service.

Will have a browse now as we realy want this but dont really have much cash to spare as the club is basically funded by the supporters. Will see how these aquisition ones work, thanks for the advice
