When does CPU speed become pointless?

I've been thinking about all the reviews recently of the C2Q's, C2D's and Phenoms and how the Q6600 is so much better etc. but all the tests are only carried out at low resolutions to show the CPU's power. At what resolution would the CPU's speed not matter? Surely there's a point where as long as the CPU is fast enough it's not going to improve fps' anymore than an uber clocked processor?

Just a thought, I'm probably just going mad :D

You mean gaming at low res? Its only to show relative performance much like 3dmark, its obviously not a real-world use of the application.

So why don't we ever see real world applications? Why not compare a Q6600 to an E6600 and a Phenom at say 1920x1200? Surely that'd be a fairer way to do it, unless people actually game at 800x600?
