when is 3gb not 3gb

If the BIOS is reporting the same figure then this is a hardware issue, regardless.

3GB is of workstation proportions and a desktop A64 system on a ULi chipset simply does not qualify I'm afraid. You may be able to convince it to work with a BIOS update but it's doubtful IMO.

In Notepad find the line that looks a bit like:
ti(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Then change it so it looks like this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /3gb

Standard disclaimers apply. Backup first. Though I probably have better lawyers anyway :p

Note: This may still not fix your problem.

didnt work nathan :( but nice try

what i have noticed though is in system properties it says under the memory bit on first screen is "physical address extension" does it mean anything??

Ah ignore that. I've researched into this a little more and it's down to PCI Express. I'm guessing you have a 512MB graphics card right? It's down to the way memory mapping is performed. Your graphics memory gets put into the virtual memory address space.

Informative thread here: http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/ram-problems-with-a8n32-sli-deluxe-vt63746.html

In short, it is a hardware and/or BIOS problem.

Yeah the 3GB switch modifies the way Windows allocates virtual address spaces, particularly to the kernel and certain user mode programs.

The "Physical Address Extension" or PAE indication in Control Panel was just letting you know it was enabled.

Turn it off now (the /3GB switch). As it didn't work.
