When is a Mac exciting?

I got my 100 posts today, so I'm pretty happy :)

So....I'm in the Virgin Atlantic lounge at JFK, typing this in to a Mac. Why's it exciting?, I ask you say. Well, I'm in a business lounge and the booze / food is all free. I sidle up to the counter, ask for a drink, and I don't have to pay.

Small things really do amuse small minds I suppose.

So my question to all you OcUK'ers is this:

Have you travelled "posh", and does it make you feel important?

I haven't done it much and I sure feel like a superstar.
(I know the post is pointless but I wanted to share it with you !)

Unless I'm flying EasyJet (which is my preference since I can fly from Luton which is closer to home than Heathrow) I always fly business class within Europe and usually first class to the US (at least on the way back to get a 'bed').

The exceptions to that are when I'm paying (as opposed to the company pay - I do lots of business travel) in which case I usually travel cattle class.

Edit - No, it doesn't make me feel important, but then I've been doing it for 7 years or so, so there is no novelty attached to it any longer.

I wouldn't pay the price to travel business myself (4k a ticket...bejesus). Problem is that it's company policy, even if you think it's crazy money, you have to tow the company line.

how depressing...NOT. :D

I rarely pay for business tickets but I always ask for an upgrade throwing in little snippets like "..I think I deserve it as I try my best not to hold *insert airline name here*'s aircraft* which leads onto other things.

Business travel is cool but I don't think it justifies the extra expense unless you have the money at your disposal. The smugness of sitting up front while all the economy lot walk past, the free bar, the superstar treatment from the cabin crew and the posh cutlery are all very nice :D

If travelling trans atlantic I'd rather spend £300 on an economy ticket than spend £2000 on a business/1st ticket. The journey is going to be less than 12 hours and I can live with economy treatment for a saving of over a grand. If you've got the money or manage to frequently blag upgrades like me then go for it, it's great :D

You shouldn't be too happy, you'll be back in blighty in a few hours, with jet lag and crap weather :p, and possibly a hangover ;).

Do you know me?

Your spot on. The worst of it is that there is no excuse for not going to the office tomorrow as I geta bed in the sky and a free limo to whisk my to my dehydrated doom in the office of hell.

Don't forget the tips. :)

I've been in some of the lounges. Not sure if I've been in that one. Maybe. :)

PS - have an avatar, on the house. No tip required. :)

Gave my last $10 to the limo driver, so the barstaff are out of luck. They can glare, but they have to give me my drink - I'm obviously a superstar who travels in style. hehehe. :p

I don't think I do lol, although I happen to know a few people from Tonbridge with your surname. Its probably a coincidence, although an odd one.

I don't know anyone from Tonbridge with my surname. I only moved there 6 months ago though and only started using the forums at about the same time.

I'm going for another drink, any requests? I can get you one?

Yes, and no, respectively.

It doesn't make me feel important, but it means I get to travel in somewhat less discomfort, and when flying scheduled, I get to board and deplane first. It also means I have more space to get some work done, maybe hold a meeting or just grab some kip, so it's less dead time. On that basis, it's cost-effective for me, and so, worth it.

Completely agree with you. Post is a bit tongue in cheek, but I do think that in the deep bowels of your mind, you love the fact your travelling in more luxury than most. I've spent a lot of time in economy, cramped and miserable, it's now time to revel in the fact I've made it to a position in life where I can travel business and get all the "trimmings".

I always heard that asking is pretty much the worst thing you can do when looking for an upgrade. You're best off asking perhaps how much it would cost to upgrade, but not push beyond that. You're best off being dressed smartly, being nice and friendly, travelling alone and being a frequent flyer with the airline.

I myself have been upgraded a couple of times when flying with my family (theres the exception that proves the rule, lol) but i'm sure that was more to do with my Dad's Gold card or whatever it was/is, and the sheer amount of airmiles he had under his belt :p

Enjoy it if you're lucky enough!

Oh, I'd much rather be travelling in luxury than economy. Anybody would .... unless they have to pay for it. I wouldn't travel economy, and haven't for a number of years. But that's largely because I've done a lot of travelling over the years, and travelling on any plane is a drudgery to me. All I can do is minimise it.

But I don't enjoy flying (or not the travelling variety, anyway, though a spin in a Pitt Special is a hoot), regardless of the level of luxury. And believe me, if you think business class is "luxury", you have some surprises in store yet. ;) :)
