i was speaking to someone today about building a new pc, after my long run with my current laptop for 4 years now. it has 2gb ram,go 7300 gfx, core duo 1.6ghz

im running windows 7 rc, very comfortably. it does everything i need it to ,but it is very tedious in other tasks especially when mult-tasking.

am i just wasting my money as i was told. and should only upgrade when my current hardware is no longer able to support my software.

my last desktop was a amd athlon 64 3200+

so i ask when would you deem an upgrade appropiate?

i would say an upgrade is appropriate wenever you want one

Seconded.

I have a similar laptop - Core Duo 1.66, 1.5GB RAM, Go 7400. I only use it for browsing the net, watching videos and listening to music, so it's perfectly fine. I do have my desktop for my encoding and gaming though.

Id say either:

1. You have some excess money to spend.

2. Your system is really not running as you would like.

3. A part fails.

4. Some sort of amazing offer you can't turn down.

:D
