Hi there!

Ive always toyed with the idea of overclocking but its somethibg ive never done before so as it is my pc is all standard

I chose the i5 2500k as i heard it had overclocking potential so eith this i did get a after market cpu fan back when i built my system (1/2 years ago maybe?)

Im also running 2 2gb 6950s in crossfire and have 8gb ram of which im not sure on the specifics but can check later

I remember when going crossifire i was worried my psu wouldnt handle it but it had been on since so im wondering if i do overclock, will that need an upgrade? I believe its 600w but again ill post actual specs later

So as a games player will i benefit from overclocking the above? Am i missing out on untapped potential?

I can currently run most my games at highest, if not close to, with a stable fps at 1080p

But lately my system is taking longer to log in and initially load up etc

Any info given would be great, opinions etc very welcome

Thankyou

Long load time to the desktop is attributed to a clogged up start up sequence.

Hit start and search "msconfig". Have a look at startup tab and deselect anything which you don't need. Things like auto updaters and monitors that you don't look at but are loaded at startup. All these programs need to load and eat up resources as they're all doing it at once or one after the other.

Get a virus scanner, malware/adaware/spyware scanner. Give the system a scan and clean.

Load task manager and see how many processes you're running as well. Again this relates to programs loading at launch.

Don't disable any Microsoft named processes in task manager or msconfig as these are needed to run the system.

Uninstall anything you don't use, run a disk cleanup and the always forgotten, defrag. It's not uncommon for a system to become clogged after 1 or 2 years of a Windows install.

Overclocking will just mean it'll get through the processes fractionally faster. If you're games are running to a level you are satisfied with, then leave the system alone and just perform some good old fashioned maintenance.

Thanks for advice

I have tried the msconfig startup clear up recently but theres some stuff on the list that im unsure what it is so ive left it in

Also steam updates everytime i turn on my pc, is this normal?

Thanks

Also have a look in CCleaner/tools/startup. you may get a better description of whats starting there.
I dont use Steam, but if you stop it from starting, surely it then cant update itself?
Then just click on the Steam shorcut, to use it.

I will try this, but it may update once i click the .exe (pretty much use steam every time im on the pc)

Ive used ccleaner, so will have a look at its start up list

Thanks :)

You can safely remove anything that doesn't have a microsoft corporation label attached.
However, things like Steam will need you to open it manually. Steam updating everytime you launch it is more likely to be Steam logging into the server and asking the server if the files it owns are the same as what the server owns, ie: is there any new material that should be downloaded, updates for Steam or games.

Quick answer, yes it is normal. Unless, it is downloading the same things everytime you launch Steam which is highly doubt.

Spyware/malware etc scan is next on your list if you haven't already done it.

How much hard drive space have you got left?

Hi and thanks

I have about 300gb left i believe

That's plenty obviously. Just a real good clean out of the system. Take it someone who does it for a living is always a good shout. Like hiring a cleaner, as an appropriate analogy. (check out the alliteration!)
