I'm moving from a flat into a shared house that already has bills being paid, so I no longer need my gas, electricity or water bill. Should I ring up to cancel the utilities before I move out or should I ring up the first weekday after I've moved out?

Sorry for the stupid question but I'm not that good with things like this. I have significant amounts of credit on my utility bills, so I don't have any outstanding balances that are due to be paid.

It can take up to 10 days before everything is turned off but each company is different so you should call them asap and ask them

I would ring them and let the know the date and see what they say, when we moved out the flat I had already warned the utilities a month before.

Oh and make sure you take meter readings the day you move out, I would also take a photo of each meter showing the readings.

No need to do it in advance. On day of moving out, take pictures. Ring them up with final meter readings, job done.

They will write a new letter to the address saying they are the supplier and asking who moves in to contact them.

At new property take photos as you move in.
You may be able to work out who the supplier is, you may be told. If not, wait for similar letter. This can be slightly annoying as you will be on a standard tarriff until you sign up for something.
I think in theory you can start a move to a new supplier.

Or you may get away with what I did, rang one of the big guys and said "hi I think you supply my property I just moved in" they said nope its "xyz" so they do seem to know who is supplying in some cases even if not them.

We just did this. Take pictures of the meters on the day you move out. I did it online with final readings. Had my Balance refunded within 4 days
