Just renewed the insurance on my 10 year old Corsa for another year, fully comp. Standard 1.2 D model but beginning to wonder at what point ~£300 for the cover is worth what they would pay out, as pretty much anything beyond a scratch on a car that age will be a write off. Unfortunately most of the "valuation" sites want an email address, you can't check anonymously but I reckon trade in value around £1k, presumably the write off value a little more. Obviously next year, that much less.

So starting to think TPF&T would be better value for the last couple of years (planning on ditching the car when I retire in 2019) but is the saving enough to make it worthwhile?

A couple of other nagging doubts about TPF&T is the culture shock when I eventually trade in for a newer vehicle and need FC once more, also the fact one stupid parking dint would mean all I get for the car is scrap value.

Anyone else with an older car made the downgrade and at what point did you feel Comp no longer viable?

Every time I've ever tried third party fire and theft on comparison sites it's always been more expensive than fully comp for me. Bit weird really.

Don't think TPF&T is that much cheaper then FC these days...
Many years ago TPF&T used to be much cheaper then FC

OP have you tried getting a TPF&T quote to compare to your FC ?

Yes years ago it was much cheaper, around 1/3 of the fully comp price.

Only just renewed and this was more of a musing for next year, at which point I will check pricing for both levels against a valuation of the vehicle.

On my 15 year old Yaris fully comp is still quite a lot cheaper than any third party cover (think i pay about £160 a year). I just don't see any place in the market for third party anymore, it's a bit like floppy disks or casual racism, it's had it's day.

You may find that the cheapest option is fully comp and just stick the excess as high as possible.

Pretty much the same result, you're not going to claim for a £500 car if your excess is £1500 :p

Ditto.

Just taken out new insurance for my Scorpio Cosworth - £146 fully comp, no NCD. Same quote for TPF&T was £290.

But don't you have to pay the excess even if your not claiming for your own car ?

Aye was always my understanding, whack excess as high as possible and strip any extras.

As above you pay your excess if you are claiming on your insurance for your car.

I

On an older car that's worth not much, if you do get a dent or a scrape why not just leave that dent or scrape? Providing everything is structurally sound and has no sharp edges it'll pass MOT so no need to claim for it. Cheapest route possible for insurance if the car isn't worth enough/"valuable" (only car etc) enough for you.
