So its coming up to nearly a year since i have had my gigabyte 7970 windforce, and im wondering if i should be thinking of selling it before i lose a huge amount of money on it, at current this card is selling on OCUk for more then i paid for it 10-11months ago, and i know when the next gen comes out probably at end of the year/beginning of next mine will take a huge dip in what its worth. and at present their are no games im playing or looking forward to playing its just sat doing desktop work for the most part.

So should i sell now, use a old GFX card and then save a little more for next gen? or just hold onto this until later in the year

Also with my card being a older version, i believe it is voltage unlocked and they have started locking the voltage on these cards now? so not sure if that would benefit in its re-sale.

If you're thinking of buying an Nvidia 7XX card in the next couple of weeks, now is the time to think about selling, as the 7XX cards could disrupt the market depending on pricing.

Tbh the 7970 has a lot of power and will likely still offer competitive performance VS the 760 Ti and 770.

AMD's new cards won't be out for a few more months, could always hang onto your 7970 until then..

I am not that fussed about a nvidia card really, although if the performance was to blow mine away i would consider it, im more thinking of holding out until ati's next ones at the end of the year

Some buyers paid over £470 for a 7970, so they have a bigger potential loss than you. What tends to happen is:

New cards get released, early adopters sell their old card (7970 for example) and people who are not fussed with having the latest card but would like a fair bit of performance cheap, buy the 7970 for a cheaper price. Timing helps but generally this isn't something that makes that much of a difference. The biggest worry would be what AMD release their next cards prices at.

I paid £332 for mine when i got it when they had a load of gigabyte offers on, think i would be happy with £230-£250 for it if i was to sell it now, but question is at the end of the year, is it going to only be worth £150, i guess no one knows until the new cards are out.

if you are sure that you are not going to want to play games for 6-8 months () then yeah, you will get a better resale value now that if you wait until after 8*** series to sell
but you are taking a pretty big risk on what and how much the next cards come out at

I have done this in the past for example, selling a 580 just before 680 release and managing to hold out until the 670 came out, meaning I actually pocketed a small amount of money in my upgrade

I can't particularly see an Nvidia release affecting AMD resale values though, so whether you sell now, or in 3-6 months time probably won't affect the price you get for your 7970

I want a crystal ball :p

I would still expect it to fetch £180-£200 at the year end but that is if AMD follow suit with the prices they previously launched at. If they shocked us with a sub £300 8970, your 7970 could be going for lots less.

In that case I would hold onto your 7970 right up until the '8970 / 9970' launches at the end of the year. You will probably still get £150 - £200 for it towards your new card.

I paid £480 on realease day for one of my 7970's so im going to lose big time if i sell but then ive lost money everytime ive upgraded any pc part, joys of pc gaming i spose

why sell tbh

nvidia cards coming are literally just re-badged refresh top end cards slightly faster but will be next to same performance. just like haswell waste of time if you already have 6 series nvidia or ati 7 series cards.

so no point.

being a early adapter you often lose out but gain in game fun experience.

As long as your still playing games, I'd just carry on using it and enjoy it. If AMD follow the NVidia (which started with AMD) pricing pattern, then the 7970 might not devalue that much anyway when the 780/9970 are out.
