When to upgrade from i5 2500k?

In place of upgrading your still excellent CPU,a better upgrade might be to add or expand with an SSD, that will be more helpful in games and general usage than a marginal upgrade to haswell or skylake.

I have an SSD, its a Samsung 840 pro 128gb. I have a Silverstone TJ07 case that ive had for years but still love it. I guess I will just leave things as they are.

As stated cant see why you would even need change your 2500k any time soon for gaming. Mine runs at 4.3 and i have a gtx 780 Running a 1080p monitor.
It runs anything ive thrown at it so far. Scores 3000 in valley benchmark, and runs crysis 3 full settings At 50-60 fps. That 970 should beat my card in most if not all situations and as your overclocked cpu is near as dam it indentical, id say your fine for a while to come :)

Thats true yes!! But as far as im aware only a select few actually make good use of multithreading. Its mostly gpu bound.
Unless your thinking of going I7 the difference in real terms between the 4 core range of intel right now doesnt warrant the cost of upgrading Imo. The only reason really it would benefit is power saving. Seriously you will be fine as is.
Why not buy those games first!^^ Then see how it performs. You may just be surprised.

You need a board that supports it, yours does not.

Look at normal ones such as the BX100 or 850EVO.
