When using repeated background images in css...

Is it better to use 1px width images if it's just repeated? Obviously there's less to download if you use a 100x1 image (e.g.)
But for some reason I wondered if it was better for performance if it was larger? i.e. 100x100?

I have a feeling this is a really stupid question, but I've always wondered what was best.

I use 4 x 10000, seems to do the job, but I've not tested out other sizes yet.

Doesnt the bottom of the gradient turn into a solid colour? That's what mine does, and I then only have a 400px high image and have the background colour the same as the end of the gradient so it looks normal.

Link in sig, its got hatching on it, which, iirc is why it was made it 4px wide.
