Most of you will know who commander Jameson is...my question is when will he return? in what will be most definitely the biggest game ever in history!

Supposedly scheduled for the tail enf of last year and was constantly moved back and is now for the tail end of this year.

I hope it makes it but everything says to me that it will be another Duke.

Well its been in development endlessly, as far as I remember. Frontier have one game to get out before full time development on E4, although that said Braben has been saying that since just after FFE.

It does sound like another Duke.

This is probably a good thing. If it's half as good as the original I will loose months playing it.

I played elite recently on a BBC emulator and it did bring back fond memories. Playing it the first time was the first time I remember looking up from a game and thinking - "wow it's getting light outside".

But all said and done, the game play is not that great now, trade, launch, hyperjump, fight, get to safe zone, dock, repeat.

Still on my all time fave list - Elite, Doom, Deus-Ex, GTA-Vice City, Freespace 2, NFSU2

Just because they either blew me away when I first played them, or I still play them now.

It will be hard for any sequel to beat the likes of X3 in these area. This might be why it's being delayed so long. According to a snippet on wikipedia Elite 4 will enter full production after the release of The Outside (due xmas 2009) so we are looking at 2010 minimum. If by production Braben means development, then it's still a few years away :(

Well I found X3 horrendously boring. Mainly because it was so slow to do anything. I found Frontier to be a brilliant game. Whilst the basic gameplay mechanics are as Hodders said it had so much more (like factions, passes to planets, missions, mining, etc.) and the combat was quite good (though Freespace is so much better for combat).

I'd personally like to see Frontier mixed with Freelancer and up to date graphics. That would be a vast amount of my time sucked into the game then!

The big problem with Elite is that it gets very repetitive after a while. You get your ship fully kitted out with allround military lasers and full missiles or whatever, jump a few galaxies, but there is no clear goal. Often the best tactic is to literally move back and forth between two planets (poor industrial<->rich agricultural) racking up the cash from trading, there is no real incentive to move away from that pattern.

That's not to say Elite isn't a great game and years ahead of it's time, in fact the 'free-form' nature of the game added to the sense of scale and was a welcome change from your typical linear games of that era. It's just that after playing it for a few months or whatever I started to wonder what the point of it all was (other than hitting elite status).

I don't think he ever will unfortunately. Braben keeps on pushing the release date further and further back.

I'd love to see an MMO Elite.
Sandboxed ship design, ability to follow any career path (police, pirates, miners, bounty hunters etc.)... all within the Elite universe AND online would be absolutely amazing.
Although I suspect this has already been done pretty well with Eve? (Never played it tbh)

For now I'm just happy with oolite.

One of the first game on a computer that really got me hooked on playing.

The sequels were actually pretty good too, although bug ridden.

I'm looking forward to the date that it gets a release although I certainly won't hold my breath.

Anyone got any links to up to date info on the progress?. As far as I can see, Braben says its ongoing and "getting there" , but Frontier keep knocking it back?.

In my opinion the best thing to do is not set any expectations for the game and then be pleasantly surprised when something concrete is announced. In my experience the vast majority of AAA games which are anywhere remotely close to a release usually have some sort of official public announcement (i.e. a good year or two in advance).

You should check out Jumpgate Evolution, which is due out later this year. It's an mmo, but has proper ship handling and stuff, unlike Eve. Looks like it could be good.

HangTime said “The big problem with Elite is that it gets very repetitive after a while.”
Elite First Encounters solved that in a way. With the handmade unique missions that pop up over time, the hidden aliens you can trade with and the newspapers that keep changing over time based on your actions. Some things don’t appear till you have been in game for years. (game time, not real-time)

The 100+meg CD version is still by far one of my fav space games.

I really hope he does return, but he's gonna have to do something to better the X series which now benchmark this genre IMO.

FE was very very very very buggy when I last tried it!

It's called Eve Online. Not free piloting though.
