When will game developers start using blu-ray media?

Like others, I suspect that Blu-Ray will never be used as a software distribution medium for games. I do however think it's about time Windows started coming on USB sticks instead of optical media.

Ever accidently formatted a USB stick? Yes, all the time
Ever accidently formatted a burned DVD? Not possible unless its a rewritable disk

Probably why Windows will never come on a USB drive.

I would like to see Windows 8 as a downloadble upgrade like OSX Lion is though, certainly would make hacking it a lot harder

Didn't Carmack explain the reason why Blu Rays are not as good as DVD's? Something to do with reading and writing speeds or what ever.

LOL

Luddite.

Physical media is dying across many formats.

A lot of people say this, but surely it won't happen until most countries (not just Western Europe / America) have high speed internet at a price that's affordable enough for most people to sign up to it?

A quad layer Blu Ray disc can hold up to 128GB of data, you sure there's more than 128GB of episodes? when you consider the average file size of 22 minute episode is 175mb? even a 720 rip of a 22 minute tv show is only around 500mb, ok so Maybe the simpsons would need a couple of disks, but surely 4 discs is better than 3 discs per season lol

A little low probably, i would expect decent SD to come in at around 10Mb/min, so 220mb. 720p i would expect 500-550mb for a 22 minute episode.

I don't think so, there are read-only flash sticks available that would do the job, but why both? im sure the cost of one dvd is much lower than an 8gb usb stick.

if he did, it back when we could only read bluray at 2x. It's irrelevant now. We can now read bluray just as fast as dvd.

Another reason games don't come on bluray media: the number of PC owners who have a bluray drive in their computer is vanishingly small.
I';m an enthusiast, and I don't have one. I don't know any of my friends who have one (sure, some of them have bluray players to watch movies, but not in their PC).

So, that would mean publishers would have to make two versions of each game - the bluray version and the DVD version (like back when DVDs were first introduced, you could get some games on several CDs or get the DVD version). That isn't going to happen today.

As many have mentioned, i think will see many more publishers go down the digital distribution route. Getting a part or full game on disc then the rest being downloaded through a service such as steam or origin.

Personally I hope physical media doesn't die just yet - at least not until the UK Broadband sector catches up on, a. Price and b. Genuine unlimited/unthrottled bandwidth. Otherwise gaming via DLC is still not a hugely practical option. I'm also old fashioned enough to still prefer a nice box and manual.

However, I'm contemplating putting a Blu-Ray drive in my next rebuild, partly to future proof against games eventually migrating to this format.

Just to let you guys know that CD's never overtook cassette sales worldwide.........

The "Emerging" world (awful phrase that I detest (Sorry)) kept on using this cheap, easy to reproduce format and has seen somewhat of a revival over the past few years.

I'd suggest that they might yet again overtake CD sales (worldwide) as the "developed" world moves to digital format.

PS Still love my first tape.....Chesney Hawkes - One and Only

Chrysalis Label - Catalogue Number CHSMC 3627

Released in 1991

Biggest factor in regard to digital media is obviously internet infrastructure its no big secret how far the uk has lagged behind

In general when you consider the uk's financial positioning compared to other regions you start to realize where the money was saved because a lot of our infrastructure (not just in technology sector) is outdated and falling apart as many will be more than aware of already from day to day living :P

In the longterm things are definatly heading more in the digital distribution direction and I could definatly envision gamestores selling only a gamecard liceanse which you'd then use online

The bandwith things an issue because even people on 50/100meg connections find themselves needing to do any substancial downloads i.e. a new game during the night/offpeak or risk getting a harsh warning letter/email from the ISP..

I do feel digital users are more and more being treated with the same level of contempt by isps that illegal/pirating users do, and because of the media brainwashing the general public there is a lack of distinction between the digital gamer and pirate

I've actually had my isp quote to me my monthly/quarterly usage down to the last mb before.. they really don't care if you paid for your stuff or not they just see the amount of bandwith you've used.. in the uk its pretty bad but in other parts of europe its considerably worse, and this is definatly one of the oversights of digital media that presently needs to be addressed

The media/press has not helped imo

p.s. I don't mind having the occasional game box for special editions/collectors editions of some of my favourite games/movies, but I don't miss the blockbuster style endless shelves of gaming media one bit.. not least the hassle of digging out cds/dvds and installation seriels when installing stuff :P

Market penetration for BD drives is very low at present so I would view it as being at least a few years before it happens, if at all. Like someone mentioned above, I'm an 'enthusiast' who purchased a DVD-R drive about 10 years ago (reasonably early adopter, a couple of years before DVDs started to get used much for games) and even I don't have a BD drive.

Never. I ditched my DVDRW along with my HDD in 2010. Digital downloads aren't really an issue with 40Mb/s FTTC.
