hydroponic recirculating nutrient solution here...

seriously though, i know what you mean. Its hard to get a single slot vid card these days that isn't total low end.

Bear in mind that 'total low end' these days was high end not so long ago. ;)

Yeah its true, but its all relative to the current software.

Its is really only an issue in my HTPC where a 2 slot gpu blocks the PCI slot on my mATX mobo. I'd like to use that slot for a wireless NIC.... but I think I'll have to get one for the PCI-E slot instead.

Luckily we already had cases big enough for cards like the 5970, but PC cases can't keep getting larger because it would just be ridiculous, same goes for GPU's.

Indeed, my gtx460 is probably the shortest card I've owned since a ati 9600xt.
Swapping my 4870x2 for it just made me chuckle at the difference!

Comparing a 460 to a 4870X2 isn't really the right comparison to make though. 460 is a mid-high range part, whereas the 4870X2 is a top of the line part.

Comparing the 4870X2 to a 5970 would be a more fair comparison. Although I have no idea how the lengths of these 2 compare.

I think that they have remained a similar size for a while now. Obviosuly when a new card comes out they are large, then as they get superseeded, they remake the older cards at smaller nms, so the get smaller but the top of the range ones are still large.

And todays cards are much smaller than the days of 3DFX :D
