When will the 290 partner boards arrive?

Its sad that 780 owners have too sell their games in order to try and make the card look like a half way decent buy all thinking that they will get top money for them when flea bay is full of the same games.
The 780 is a good card but it is outclassed by the 290 in everyway Nivida needs to do something about that because once the 290 has custom heatsinks Why would you buy a 780?

Because there will always be people that would only consider Nvidia for graphic card? Try to think back the number of times people asking for graphic card suggestion stating specifically "must be Nvidia" vs "must be ATI/AMD"...I could barely recall...if at all the latter one happened...

3dvision, physx to some degree and lets not forget the soon to be released gsync monitors...plenty of reasons for someone to choose a 780 or above, lets not forget the boot can also go on the other foot with amd and mantle for someones preferences.

Yes the 290 & 290x in some cases best the 780/ti/titan, but its not like the gains are absolutely huge to the point nvidias offerings are irrelevant. Same the other way about.

Of course price plays a big factor, but its nothing new for nvidia to charge more then amd for similar or slightly lesser performing cards.

Yea I might get a next gen 20nm Nvidia card to try playing with G-sync if I have spare cash when a decent 21:9 monitor with G-sync support is available...but I really hate the idea of it would cost $150-$175 extra on top of what the moniter should cost due to the Nvidia chip in it :o

This is why i wont buy Nvidia right now, they over inflate prices because they can, because people will buy their product. It doesnt mean their product is superior and in many instances it is not, yes Titan and 780ti are great cards, 780 also. I will admit though, there was a time when i wouldnt buy ATI, due mainly to poor driver support etc. Shoes on the other foot now though.

End of the day though, you buy what you deem to be the best product for your needs, want a fast card but dont want noise, heat etc and its bundled with some games you really want? buy Nvidia.

Want a fast card that has heat and noise and is bundled with some games you want, buy AMD.

Both cards can be stripped down and modded, Nvidia doesnt require it by default though, AMD neither, however most will be more inclined to with the AMD.

Horses for courses my friends

Just buy one tbh, my brother bought his last week, worried about heat and noise, and its quiet and doesnt get that hot, especially when you customise the fan profile.

I was in the camp of not wanting one until the non ref cooler versions arrived, however Mr Gibbo prised 300 notes from me yesterday with that bombshell of a deal, R9 290 + BF4 + Silver ticket for £300... with the updated Sapphire BIOS that apparently helps a lot. Plus theres a whole host of non ref aftermarket coolers you can put on these, and OCUK retain warranty if you remove the cooler on Sapphire boards i believe.

The frustrating thing with the 290 series reference cooler is that AMD probably spent hundreds of thousands on the Darth Maul red stripe design. They then forgot to make it cool properly and thought, sod it, lets release it like that as it looks good.

Missed opportunity not allowing development/release of custom partner cards earlier.

I suspect the design brief had "2 slots wide" and "fully enclosed - exhaust to rear" as non-negotiable elements.

Odd that anyone thought that a single fan design would cool a 275W TDP card without being loud.

The premium should drop off significantly once the asus timed exclusivity deal runs out (I think benq, viewsonic and some others are set to release gsync monitors). Once or if it takes off and it becomes commonplace to be either shipped with the module or be capable of adding one I'd expect prices to even out.

Half tempted by one of the asus 144hz monitors that just need the diy daughter board fitted, could do with gaining lightboost over my current vg236 too :)

Mantle nobody has seen yet and the g-sync that we have seen so far, has been uninspiring to say the least. Also, by the time it hits 27" 1440p+ IPS screens, the whole landscape will have changed from what it is now. Same for Mantle penetration in the market place. Unless you are specifically going to play an awful lot of BF4 or you only buy a graphics card every 3-5 years, basing your choice on either of these new technologies is pretty pointless.

Also, unless you bench you are going to be hard pushed to tell the difference between the Titan/780/ti/290/x when you game. Buy whichever colour you prefer or, if you want the best value, buy a 290. If you want quiet, wait for the 290 after market coolers or buy a 780/ti now.

Agree. If we were to toss the features all aside, there's no doubt that AMD is current giving better bang for bucks. However I have to point out that Mantle is more like a "bonus" which people think more along the line of "if it gives free performance boost in the future games (EA's in particular), sure what not?", whereas the G-sync feature on Nvidia's is definitely not gonna benefit anyone that's not getting a new monitor that supports it...so the circumstance is a bit different.
