:D No seriously, it's probably around the corner isn't it? 4800 series came out last year. Wouldn't be surprised if this time next year if not sooner, there'll be a 68xx series available.

lol, impatient. but your right ati probably already have a team working on this card. be interesting to know how they are gonna beat the 5870 (dual core gpu maybe ?????)

The 5870 is an evolution as opposed to revolution and they have stated that they expect the tech to last a few go-rounds.

Not sure what process (40nm etc) it's likely to end up using but they are having a lot of trouble making chips smaller, I doubt we'll see 6870s this time next year.

Well the we have had two refreshes a die shrink and a update. I think a refresh or two of the 5800 and we will have the new architecture probably on 40nm.

After 40nm, cards will probably go parallel.

I think as soon as they can handle the production, GlobalFoundries will get the ATI contract to fab GPUs.

This, but could be some time... considering how little cards were available on launch seen as Dell eaten them all.

i'd say mid to this time next year, but have to see what Nvidia has, as no competition then ATi will keep 5000's out, same thing happened with the nvidia 8800 series, no ATi competition so they lasted longer than normal

I reckon ATI's next gen will be longer, the 58xx is just a continuation of the past 2-3 generations, with Nvidia moving to a totally new design I can see ATI following suit, as Nvidia's design could be revolutionary.

4870 came out in June 08, it's now Sept 09, what on earth makes you think the 6870 is around the corner???

Well I suppose you're right. I tend to think of anything within about 15 months
as being around the corner. Time just goes so fast the older I get :(

Is that a subtle hint?? :p

i'm sure i read on anandtech that the rumours were that ATis next series would be a new arch. would make sense, get to know the 40nm tech with an arch you're very familiar with, then move on to a new arch on 40nm.

it's what intel does isn't it?

If it is this time next year we will be board with our 5870's and burning more holes in our pockets so I think the later it comes the better.

What do you think?
