When will the next consoles be released?

I'll tell you now, most games of the next generation will not have 60fps, will not have 16x af and will not have more than 4xAA.

I'm willing to bet that 95% of the people that own a 360 or a PS3 couldn't tell you what was different between 30 and 60fps if they saw it on the screen.

Indeed. I doubt I can tell 16xAF nor higher than 4xAA. Some of the games now use 4xAA and that seems good enough. And as for frame rate I couldn't tell that Rage was 60fps, I think a game has to go below 20fps for me to notice that something is not quite right. :D

The only thing I want is better physics, much better textures with nary a blocky pixel in sight and better AI.

I think they should wait for the next kind of digital media.

Think about it - PS1/CD, PS2/DVD, PS3/Bluray...
TBH if they don't I reckon it won't feel like a real, worthwhile upgrade.
Also, they'll need the storage space if they're going to update everything to the max lol - esp technically with physics engines etc

Or here's an idea: Maybe they should go variable like USB storage or some such thing... Then a game can use what it needs - AND game price can vary depending on content :)

Will never happen, but thought I'd throw it out there ^_^

Really? The 360 uses DVD and the PS3 uses Blu ray yet most multiplats get better reviews on the 360.

The Blu Ray tech can go up to 8 layers iirc which means 200gb disks. The vast majority of PS3 games don't even fill 25gb.

All PC games still come on DVD but still look better than the consoles. Dice just came out and said that they expect the quality of visuals in the PC version of BF3 to be standard on the next gen consoles. That game ships on DVD.

There won't be a need for a new storage medium for years yet.

New Xbox will be shown at E3 2013 with a release end of 2013. This was confirmed a few days ago I believe as I saw it on IGN.

Happily looking forward to the next gen, I want sharper graphics and better framerates. Current consoles are now limiting games (Battlefield 3 24 player on console and 64 on PC) so bring on the new gen :D

Source?

And Confirmed and IGN should never be used in the same sentence sadly. Just the other day they had an article about how much better the Vita will sell over the 3DS and how it is the saviour of handheld gaming because it has more power and so on. They said EXACTLY the same thing about the PSP v DS and are getting rightfully mocked about the article across the web.

And look at the Vita thread we have, I'm probably the most hyped guy here for it and I think they were talking out of their ass.

As others have mentioned consoles are about gameplay rather than graphics.
I am more annoyed at games (yes PS3 I mean you) that aren't even 720p and/or with crap loading times. GT5 just makes the PS3 feel like an old computer with such sluggish loading between menus and such long loading times.
I think 2013 we will see the new Xbox and Playstation. I think the Wii will be sooner but I couldn't care less about that.

It isn't a case of 'the current consoles are old', it is more a case of the 360 and PS3 are selling well, so why replace them before they need to be.

Don't know why you need the link as the site was specified so easy to search and you hold no regard for their stories but here ya go...

Personally the minimum I expect graphically is solid framerates, some form of AA (Im sorry but jaggies need to dealt with as they just look worse and worse on bigger HDTVs) and 720p (1280x720!!! - no silly tricks this time!) across the board. Everyone screams about 1080p, but currently its hard to appreciate that with existing tech over 720p so I just cant see it being the minimal standard.

Its also means more headroom for the bells and whistles (including 3d) and perhaps far more consideration on AI, physics and other techniques that bring a player into a game outside of graphics fidelity. I think thats been the main downfall this gen...

Dont think we are going to see a massive improvement on loading times with BD, unless the next PS lets you fully install games on HDD - but considering finite HDD space and multiple games I dont think thats an easy challenge, might mean developers are forced to compress assets irrelevant of BD size if the image has to sit on the HDD too...

ps3ud0

I didn't want to find the wrong article and maybe not find the confirmation you were referring to.

I would have to say though, with respect, there is no confirmation in that article at all. They even say themselves that it is rumour and that Microsoft refused to comment.

I don't doubt that somewhere developers are working on the early stages of games for it and that some time next year dev kits will be released to said developers.

I just thought it a little odd that you said confirmed that was all.

Develop has heard from multiple industry sources, including chip manufacturers and middleware firms, that the console's reveal will come at E3 2013, with a late 2013 launch to follow.

For now, all of these are rumors, and Microsoft has declined to comment on any of them.

I'd be a little surprised if there wan't some improvement only because the current drives are only 2x and current readers for PCs are 10x. When you ask a manufacturer to sign a contract for 50 odd million of them the price also goes right down. What I would like to see is no game NEED an install, but ALL games to offer one to improve loading. So if you have the money for a TB or larger drive then fine you can install everything and be on your merry, while the standard Playstation only comes with a standard drive so wouldnt have as much room available.

I expect it to have at least 500gb minimum storage though for games/tv shows and movies which they are gradually ramping up via either the store or 3rd parties. Plus by the time the PS4 is released i'll be more expensive to put smaller drives in anyway since less will be being made. Hopefully they make them 3.5" drives though instead of 2.5".

Youll find the loading times down to the poor read rate of the PS3's Blu ray drive (2x read speed) hence its need to install chunks of games to the console.

I have both but to be fair the xbox is the only one that gets used. I dont feel we need a new console just yet, id be happy getting the most out of the current one for now.

I want to see some radical new things showing up on the new consoles, for now the graphics are still great and gameplay is still fantastic (game dependant obv)
I want to see the console become even more of a media unit as well as a gaming one.

With the release of uncharted 3 next week i think they are just about maxing out this generations potential!

I reckon 2013 e3 may see an announcment of the next xbox and will release the following year, and maybe ps4 in 2014 for a 2015 release?

However i hope the playstation get out around the same time as people just saw that 360 came first and wante it an i think thats where playstation missed a lot of custom!

Also each xbox and playstation should learn a thing or 2 from eachother!

Like playstation should focus more on online features and xbox should try and implement a bluray drive, or a new media of there own as multidisc gaming should be a thing of the past!
