Much like the Wii they seem impossible to find. Have Nintendo stopped making them or what? As an aside does anyone know anything about Viva Pinata making an appearance on this platform?

Nintendo would only stop making DS Lite's if they got fed up with making money. They must just be hard to get hold of. You should be able to find them somewhere. Otherwise, just keep an eye on ebay or the member's market.

A port of Viva Pinata was announced in 2007, but Wikipedia doesn't have any info beyond that.

No they definitely haven't stopped making them, but the British public has an obsession with Brain Training so they are selling like hotcakes!

No chance of seeing VP on the DS tbh, as both VP and Rare are owned by Microsoft.

The DS seems to be very popular these days as its a good hanheld with games for all ages, don't think I would ever sell mine espeacially now I got an R4 so can put media on it and also new themes which are awsome.

I sold my first one as was very short of money at the time but I would never want to let it go again.:D

What about importing one from Asia? I quite like the crimson/black one. I've seen they are 110V though, is the power system in the DS fixed at this voltage and therefore I'd need a transformer rather than a UK adapter?

You can either buy a transformer or a UK DS lite charger lead, both will work out probably the same costwise but the lead would be easier to carry around
