Where are nVidia GPU's made?

I was just wondering, who makes these GPU's? Does nVidia have several fab plants like AMD and INTEL that knocks out loads of GPU cookies?

I'm aware that companies like Foxconn and Flextronics assemble the boards but do they get given the GPU's already connected to the PCB or is that what they do?

Not important really just curious :)

Pretty sure Nvidia's GPU cores are fabbed by TSMC, same with AMD I think as they haven't started fabbing ATI cores in their own fabs yet as far as I know. The cores are then sold to people like Foxconn to put on PCBs.

Right, so they contract out the work to a third party? Wonder why that is?

INTEL and AMD have their own Fabs right, I thought nVidia would have their own golden goose laying GPU's 24/7?

Aye, Intel and AMD produce their chips at their own fabs. It's a really expensive process though, which I think is why Nvidia and ATI "rent out" fabs from TSMC etc.

cheaper to outsource most likely :)
The interesting one would be why AMD doesnt bring the Ati fabricating in house as they already have the structure in place

Yeah true. I mean it's Taiwan, must cost pocket money to companies like Nvidia.

When AMD aquired ATI, I think that Hector Ruiz said that eventually they would move ATI production over to their fabs. I imagine that AMD themselves just need to either get to grips with the architecture or take over the design process before they'll do that, either that or he meant when Fusion goes into mass production.

Every thread needs some pictures. . . . ooooh pretty! ;)

Thanks for replies all.

So next question is what happens next? does that company also mount the GPUs to the PCBs or do they just pack them up and send them to be assembled by Foxconn/Flextronics?

lol just imagine how many thousands of pounds worth of CPU is in that last picture alone. Geek's wet-dream.

I would find it very wierd if a geek was having a wet dream over a cpu. First thing I would do is lock them up in cherry knowls.

It's a figure of speech. I think I would get a bit excited if all those chips were ultra high end and I could choose the core I wanted, must be a gEEk thing I guess! :D

Just thinking back to when I were a lad (cue Hovis music) we were taken to the Science Museum to see an exibition on Silicon chips. When you came out there was a small bucket type thing containing hundreds of credit card sized bits of plastic with a silicon chip glued to it, a freebie momento if you will, anyway for some reason I took as many as I could fit in my pockets lol, an omen maybe! ;)
