Where can I find a Free Lan network speed application ?

Homeplugs normally have a http login page to setup the homeplugs setting and a lot of them have the current connection speed listed on one of the pages.

Most 200mbps homeplugs only run near full speed if you have them plugged in at the same room but once across the house your be lucky to get 100mbps.

Just copy large files across the lan. Speeds vary, but should be a lot faster than wireless.

Just remember that both wireless, and homeplug have packet overheads, so a 14 megabit homeplug would normally provide around 6-8 megabits on a 2 node point to point setup. (Cant use most surge protectors as they filter this signal a lot).

The 85 Homeplugs have an effective throughput of 25-35mbps once you strip out all the error correction and protocol, and the 200 Homeplugs 50-90mbps.

Its still better than wireless, on a 14mbps 802.11 network your lucky to get 2-3mbps of usable bandwidth, on a 54mbps wlan the best I ever got was 22mbps (and often much less).throughput even though the network card claimed 95% signal strength and 54meg connection speed. There are simply too many overheads, and latency has great effect on overall data transfer on an IP network. On the whole, I find even the cheapest Homeplug 1's are more consistant performance than wireless lan.

The throughputs listed in the marketting info for homeplug and wireless are rubbish basically, but imho Homeplug is faster than WLan. Either way if you can get a real Lan cable, a 100BaseT connection will be faster than any of them, and you have a very good chance of being able to run gigabit. Its not that hard to sling a cable, even if you have to bury it in the wall to please parents/partners :P.
