I asked here before to see if anyone here wanted the job but as I've had no bites it's time to cast the net a bit wider. We need someone to migrate our site to another host as our current host isn't up to much anymore. We're happy to pay, however we need someone who can take ownership and also help iron out any kinks once it's done.

Due to this I'm averse to the likes of Fiverr as I need someone I have at least a bit of rapport with rather than some rando in India.

Any idea where to find someone?

Cheers :)

Hmmm, gonna keep a bit of a record on here of what's going on as it could make for some entertaining reading.

So far I've had a few people approach me, one is $10 an hour which doesn't fill me with confidence. I typed out a decent response with what I need, the website URL and whatnot and his response to that was basically "accept offer send login details ok".

Lol.

Have you selected the new host? Do they offer a site migration service?

No, not yet. I guess this leads me on to my next question...

many of the hosts will migrate it over for you.. things like php extensions are quite easy to install too.

I'd be careful what you pick as you're giving someone access to your DB etc.

That's why I'm careful too, not keen on giving out our info to randoms.

Anyone know what sort of server I'd be looking at? We don't have the traffic to justify a dedicated server, and our site is too heavy for a shared host so I'm looking at VPS. Would a 4gb server, dual core do it do you think?

Apologies for all the questions, but I'd prefer to have this done once and for all.

Have you tried your local school or university?

No, but it's certainly something worth considering, cheers :)

https://stablepoint.com/ is run by a forum member, they have a great track record (https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/oc-uk-host-review.17411674/page-22).

I would enquire with them as you may get a more personal setup, especially as even small forums can be resource heavy and need some knowledge to run nicely.

You still may need a dev of some description to aid the migration. I would throw my hat into the ring as it's my day job but I don't tend to get involved with the deployment side of things these days.

This looks great, thanks! Would love to support one of the forum members rather than a megacorp.

@Beansprout do you have any VPS options? I see you have dedicated servers which are beyond the scope of this project, and shared hosting which seem to support multiple sites rather than one hungry one. Not really sure how this works as they don't really give an accurate representation of what resources are used. Can you confirm please?

Cheers :)

Well after a week of me not being able to help due to work, @antijoke came through and transferred us in no time at all.

The site is so much zippier now it's unreal, have a little look if you want www.forevergaming.co.uk

Can happily recommend James if anyone needs any dev work done, dude's a champ :)
