Just wondering, more out of curiosity than anything else.

Currently scouting out hosting for a site I might buy (it's alright mods, I won't mention it :D), and have been surprised by the prices.

Not particularly bothered by them, since thats the rate, but i'm surprised at the spec of the server machines. A couple hundred a month is getting you a nice amount of bandwidth, but the server isn't any faster than my pc (unless ive missed something obvious).

Are there any places were you can plug your own pc and just use the bandwidth or am I missing something very very obvious?

Apologise, didn't specify, I know that consumer lines are woefully inadequate for running a server, I was just wondering how the cost was split for dedicated servers.

Found a decent server (ish) with the following specs:

Intel i7 930, 12gb ram, 1tb hdd with unmetered 100mb line with 5 usable ipv4 address + cpanel and whatnot.

He is looking for $135 a month, but is willing to put me on a cheaper package til I need the full speed.

Seems decent enough specs, major company, was referred to by a friend who works in the industy.

That spec is far too high for a webserver. A 1/3 of the spec is more than enough.

Its going to be used for people streaming videos, surely it will need some processing power behind it, especially since it will be geting 120k+ minimum views a month and will hopefully be rising a fair bit more.

If it is to high, then i'll definitely drop down to a Pentium D or whatever else is on offer.
