Where do all the cases go...

Both a practical and spiritual question

I've been trying to find an old beige 'computer fair' case we used to use for builds many years ago, with little luck, those that are available are battered and listed by bay chancers.

The experience has really got me thinking about e-waste though, and as per title, where did all the cases go given they're not small items?

Default response is generally landfill, but looking back at some of the old cases I owned, even the cheap ones, I would like to think the metals were maybe recycled? Am I too hopeful?

I took my last two to the local tip for metal recycling.
I've still got a few of the components, I was going to put them on eBay but I'm not sure I can be bothered with morons.

Yeah selling and buying older stuff is seldom fun and without risk.

My hunt will continue!

I'd assume the bulk, even in landfill would have been separated out into scrap recycling, you'd hope at least.

they dont need to goto landfill. just break off the font plastic, and separate a window if there is one, and then into recycling. My last case is now a frizbee and some coke cans

Steel and aluminium are easily recycled, so put them in the right bins at your local tip and your conscience can be relatively clear. If people just dump them in general waste, then yeah, they'll go to landfill though.

My old pcs get handed down to mum. Presumably after her they end up at the tip, she probably asks the tip workers what to do with it. God knows where it goes after that, maybe Nigeria or whatever.

Ours go to recycle via weee disposal, we've got a few relics of the past i.e beige cases some still beige and some with that traditional 'lovely' smoker staining.

Where are you based? shipping wouldn't be a option sadly.

Up in the north west but I make any excuse to go to York on a regular basis, so if you don't mind holding onto one for a short while I don't mind a trip over

My guess is the cheap ones people buy go straight to landfill, those who buy decent ones keep them forever, sell or give away, generally speaking.

Still using my Fractal Arc 2 Midi. It's had a good run, and i can't see any reason other than if i wanted a different MB size there be a need to change.

I have an old Antec full tower case. It's a bit bashed up, so I don't think I'd be able to sell it. It's functioning quite well as a shelf currently. I'll take it for recycling the next time I reorganise my office

It's like anything. Supply and demand. All those cases that were thrown or recycled. And then nostalgia kicks in and there's fewer cases to go around.

Thankfully, I have a large supply of PC retro beige boxes.

Look in the retro topic on OCUK to speak to like minded people.
