I've currently got a system setup which is as follows...
  • AMD Ryzen 5 Six Core 1600X
  • Gigabyte GA-AB350-Gaming 3 AMD B350
  • Team Group Vulcan T-Force 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C16 3000MHz Dual Channel Kit
  • Alpenfohn Ben Nevis CPU Cooler - 120mm
  • EVGA superNOVA 650 P2
Recently upgraded to a 27" 1440p monitor for everyday use and gaming.

I've currently got a
  • ROG Strix 1070 OC edition
Not sure whether to either upgrade the CPU to a 3700x, with a new board possibly.

Or

Look at upgrading to a 2070 Super

Or

Both of the above!?

Leaning towards the super? I think the system I have is probably strong enough for 1440p, just need a bit more in the GPU department?

At 144hz, a 3600X or 3700X would be reasonable and worthwhile upgrades.

Though a new card would be beneficial too. If I absolutely had to chose, I'd probably take a 2070 Super over a new CPU though.

Unless maximum FPS is your goal, then a CPU - you can always turn down settings on a GPU to get higher frames, nothing you can do about CPU ceiling.

If you're leaning towards new CPU, board + GPU, you might just consider actually selling that PC and starting fresh?

Unless I hold out for the AIB 5700XT's?

Well as it stands at the moment with the system as it is, i can run Division 2 on Ultra at 1440P, with volumetric fog turned down and hit 60-80FPS

That's what I mean though - if you're content with 60-80fps, then by all means stick out with the CPU and just get a card until you feel you need a new CPU. 144hz doesn't mean you have to aim for crazy framerates, it's entirely up to the user.

Personally I like to strike a balance between framerate and affordability, I've a 144hz monitor but I usually aim for about 90 in demanding games, I upgrade often enough that I always stick with midrange CPUs like 9600K, 2600X, 3600 etc when I buy.

Yes, 5700XT is a viable alternative, but being a brand new architecture there are definitely a few teething problems. I would still say it's well worth waiting for the AIBs though and see where it all sits next month.

That motherboard will support the new Ryzen 3xxx CPUs if you update the BIOS.

What are your current CPU and GPU usage figures? They will tell you where the bottleneck lies.

Your 1070 is still a good GPU but you'll see about a 40% improvement with the 2070S. That's a noticeable improvement.

Yeah I've seen that the board can take it with the update, but, there's a few users who have reported instability etc with the update and the new CPU's.

Not sure on the usage, I'll see if I can find out next time I've got a game booted up.

Hmm, it handles everything I throw at it, but for the sale of say £250 (After selling the 1070) I'd get that 40% boost.

Division 2.

Cpu usage - anywhere between 10-50% (On average its 30/45%)

GPU Usage - Constantly sitting above 90%, normally 95%+

Is that overall or per core? Are any cores 100% used?

If no CPU core is 100% used then the game is GPU-bound and will not benefit from a new CPU.

Individual cores where anything between 20-70%, Mainly sitting around 40/50 in general.

There was a time where the game seemed to freeze and one core was at 100%, think this is an issue with the game tbh.

ive got nearly the same set up, (Dell QHD 2719) and my choice was the 2070S, but then was going from a 780GTX so made the CPU/GPU a no brainer
